Closs 168 Twice as nice as before IWIU Lady Red Devils defend state me By Dick Sterling The Hammond Lady Red Devils have certainly earned their mark in Section 10 high school sports history. Sunday afternoon, in front of a huge crowd of supporters at Hudson Valley Community College, in Troy, the girls, from one of the smallest schools in the state, defended their TSew York State Class D basketball title with a 47-38 victory over Section 9's John A, Coleman Catholic. This time there would be no need for a miracle shot, there would be do nail-biting drama in the final seconds. But the victory, coupled with Saturday's 53-40 decision over Section 6 champ Ripley, was just as sweet for this group of young athletes who, after becoming the first Section 10 team to win a state basketball championship in 2007, are now the first to ever repeat the magic. Hammond wasn't the only Section 10 team to bring titles to Northern New York. The Chateaugay boys won the' Class D title and the Malone girls claimed the Class A banner. In all, seven teams from either the Northern Athletic Conference or the Frontier League played in the \Final Four\ tournaments over the PREP LEAGUE Walton's Auto Care 49 1 / 2 -30 1 / 2 Wainwright's Photo. 49-31 Newvine's 49-31 J. Ogdensburg and Sackets Harbor boys teams and Madrid-Waddington and Sackets Harbor girls teams weren't as fortunate. Expectations were high this year as Coach Shawn Dade returned every starter from the 2007 state championship team. The girls breezed through their league schedule, in fact they will begin next season with a 101-game winning streak against Northern Athletic Conference West Division teams. The Lady Red Devils breezed through the Section 10 tournament with an easy semifinal win against Harrisville, and a title-clinohing performance against Chateaguay. Last week they easily defeated Argyle to earn a return trip to Troy. HAMMOND 53 RIPLEY 40 In Saturday's semifinal contest, both teams were slow out of the gate offensively, the Lady Red Devils held a.7-2 advantage after one quarter, but scored the first 12 points in the second quarter to open a 19-2 advantage. The Lady Blue Eagles pecked away at the lead, and managed to cut the big Hammond advantage back to 24-13 at the half, but they would only manage to cut the lead to under ten points- (eight) once during the rest of the game. Brittany Kenyon, the defending Class D Player of the Year, scored 17 points to lead the Red Devils into the title game, but she had plenty of help. Nicole Davidson scored 10 points, and played tough under the basket as she also pulled down 10 rebounds and made nearly every inside attempt by the Eagles difficult. Aubrie Dunn also earned a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds. Samantha Eimers played • an outstanding game for Ripley as she netted 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. She scored 11 of the Blue Eagles final 14 points. The Lady Red Devils had ah opportunity to play the state title game against a team within a short drive of their school, but Sackets Harbor lost their semifinal game to John A Coleman Catholic 40-33. HAMMOND 47 JOHN A. COLEMAN 38 Once again, the Lady Red Devils played hard on both ends of the floor right from the opening tip. By the end of the quarter the scoreboard showed Hammond in front KM. In the early going, it was Davidson who provided the key spark for Hammond as she got free inside and helped her team build a 23-16 lead,by the intermission. Davidson netted a team-high, nine first half points. Kenyon, who spent part of the first half on the bench with a couple of fouls, came aliye after the break as she connected on many key shots, made some spectacular passes and played tough on defense. The Hammond lead grew to 37-26 after three quarters, and the Stateswomen never were able to mount a serious threat over the final eight minutes, of play. Kenyon, who was named the tournament Most \Valuable Player, finished with 17 points, 13 hi the second half. Davidson finished with 12 and Brooke Hollister added 11, Dunn, for the second game in a row, pulled down 10 rebounds. Taylor Leonard scored 14 points to lead the Stateswomen. Kiersten Albrecht added 12. John A. Coleman Catholic finished the season with a record of 22-2. Hammond wrapped up the 2O07-O8 season with a record of 24-4. Support for the Lady Red Devils comes in many forms of expression and (from the left) Taylor Kenyon, Brandon Howie, Chuck Clemons, Craig Knorsworthy and Elliot Dunn served up the best in red and white style, both in Troy and at the welcome home champions party held at Hammond Central School on Sunday, March 16.
