State hoops champs for a second straight year By Sandy Wyman The sun was still shining bright with the faithful beginning to gather once more, a familiar scene as word spread from cell phones monitoring the progress of the trip home from Troy where the team beat Coleman Catholic 47-3 8 for the State Class D title after winning Saturday's game against Ripley 53-40 in the semi-finals. (Find details of the games in our sports section) A parade of vehicles, the Sheriff's Department and the New York State Police leading the motorcade with the Hammond Fire Department providing escort service, the well-known bus of champions was met with yet another display of overwhelming support. As the lengthy motorcade made its way down Route 37 to take a spin around the village before the champions stepped again into the limelight at the front doors of the school where wall-to-wall admirers waited for the chance to see the famous \Red Dozen + 2\ home for a hero's welcome. A \Sea of Red\ now nicknamed \The Red Nation\ by emcee Chet Truskowski as he honored the 2008 Section X Class D New York State Champion Lady Red Devils of Hammond Central at their welcome home party where upwards of 500 cheering fans took to the bleachers on Sunday, March 16. With thunderous applause at each and every turn since the team's triumphant return to victory and home for the second straight year, School Superintendent Doug McQueer brought the house down with \We were the first to win a championship and now we are the first to go back to back.\ It comes as no surprise that Brittany Kenyon (No.l 1) was named MVP of the tournament for the second year in a row. She will advance after graduation in June to play Division 1 basketball as a member of the University of Vermont Catamounts. Each and every member of the team expressed their appreciation for fan support and especially over the long weekend where the \Devils\ of Hammond filled seats with a \Red\ show. According to Cassie Cunningham (No. 21), \It was just overwhelming to see all the people who came to cheer us on. It was an awesome experience.\ With shouts from the bleachers for Coach Shawn Dack to speak at the podium, it became apparently clear why the \Red Devils\ are the best once again. \We never thought about a repeat, we did not even talk about it. We played one play at a time and one game at a time.\ There will be a dinner to honor the girls in the near future, they as a team and as individuals show the best in sportsmanship and humility far beyond their years. Congratulations \Red Dozen+ 2,\ the best of the best! The Lady Red Devils of Hammond Central get ready to exit the bus and join hundreds of their faithful supporters on Sunday, just a few short hours after these mighty fine \hardwood shiners\ won the Class D New York State Championship for the second time in as many years! (Sandy Wyman photo) Gouverneur Central will be open March 24 th The severity of the winter of 2007-08 has caused district officials to use their entire allotment of six snow days. The district was forced to use the final allotted day available on March 5. Due to the possibility of unsettled weather in days ahead, and in an effort to preserve the days scheduled for Spring Break in April, the Gouverneur Central Board of Education has approved a decision to have school in session on Monday, March 24, a day that had been originally scheduled as a vacation day. Again... school for all Gouverneur Central students will be in session on Monday, March 24. Traffic stop turns up weapons, cash, drugs Two Pennsylvania men jailed after Monday arrest By Dick Sterling Two young Pennsylvania men had an opportunity to get a close-up look at the historic arch in the Gouverneur Village Park on Monday, but they weren't exactly on a sight- seeing tour. Gouverneur Village Police, while on routine patrol at about 7 p.m., observed a 2003 Infiniti proceed through the turn only lane at the intersection of West Main and Clinton Streets, and continue northbound on East Main Street. The vehicle, operated by Mark M. Beam, 21, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, was stopped directly in front of the arch in the Gouverneur Village Park. As a result of a field interview with the driver of the vehicle and a passenger, Michael S. Boyd, 19, also of West Chester, the subjects were removed from the vehicle and Village Police, with the assistance of Gouverneur based state police, searched both the occupants and the vehicle. The search yielded a set of brass knuckles and a billy club in Mr. Boyd's possession. A search of the vehicle turned up a small amount of marijuana, three Percocet tablets, a loaded .22-caliber assault rifle, two high-capacity ammunition magazines which hold over 100 rounds of ammunition each, several rounds of ammunition and over $4,000 in cash. Police also discovered two bullet- proof vests. A subsequent search of Mr. Boyd revealed a state of Maine and state of Arizona personal identification cards, which contained false dates of birth. Mr. Boyd was charged with four counts of criminal possession of a weapon third degree, two counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument second degree, as well as criminal possession of a controlled substance seventh degree and unlawful possession of marijuana. Mr. Beam was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance seventh degree, and unlawful possession of marijuana and was also ticketed for failure to turn as required. Both men were arraigned in Gouverneur Town Court before Town Justice Stanley H. Young Jr., and were remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $ 10,000 cash or $20,000 bond each.
