What followed was one of the most bizarre overtime ses- . sions in recent memory. When \ a soccer game ends in a tie the two teams play two 10-minute overtime periods, but neither Gouvemeur nor Ogdensburg could score in either overtime session. As darkness began to fall over Potsdam, the W ildcats and Blue Devils were about to hook up in a good old fashioned Shootout. In soccer, after all the other means of overtime have been exhausted, the two teams attempt to score with five different players firing from point-blank range. Surely this would decide it. Wrong! After the Blue Devils had taken a 2-0 advantage in the Shootout on goals by Jon O'Keefe and Travis Phillips, the Wildcats came back with goals from Josh Stoweil and David Petrie, and actually took a 3-2 lead when Nate Hopper found the mark. O.F.A. had one more shot, and Todd Ben- neu beat Gouvemeur Wildcat goalie Brady Wood to knot the Shootout up at three goals apiece. As dusk was quickly turning to night the officials determined that what would follow would be a sudden-death Shootout. The first team gaining an ad- vantage would move on to the State playoffs. Gouverneur's Andrew Lacy would shoot first. He missed wide to the left. Next up, O.F.A.'s Tom Graveline. Brady Wood makes the save and they move on to round two of Shootout number two. Gou- vemeur sends up sophomore Ben Hassett who drills a shot to Cavanaugh's left and into the goal. As the Wildcats begin to celebrate the Blue Devils still have another shot at tying the contest for the sixth time. O.F.A. shooter Matt Starefield fires a rocket right at Brady Wood who deflects it over the crossbar, his twelfth save o( the contest. The Wildcats will now move one to state playoff ac- tion with a game against Sec- tion 7 champs Plausburgh, at St. Lawrence University, to- day (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. Mailman Plav Santa For YOU Every Week off the Year GIVE Grid 'Cats pile up stats but lose, 33-14 THE By Dick Sterling In spite of a sul sheet that looked relatively even, the Gouvemeur Wildcats were beaten in Watertown Friday night by a score of 33 to 14. That clipped the Wildcats to one and six in the league. ' Watertown improved its stand- ing to five and two. The Wildcats had one of k their most impressive games of the year in total offense as they rolled up 311 yards, and were .paced by an impressive night . from Tony Phillips who shred- ded the Cyclone defense for • 188 yards on 23 carries, in- cluding touchdown runs of 15 yards in the second quarter and a one-yard plunge in the fourth. Phillips also led the Wildcat defense with 17 tackles. While the Cyclones were having trouble containing Phil- lips, the Wildcats were trying to figure out a way to stop Waiertown running back Ja- son Tremont, who scored four touchdowns on the nighu and accounted for 141 yards total offense. Tremont scored on first quarter runs of 11 and 10 yards, on respective touchdowns as the Cyclones led at the end of the quarter, 13 -0. Watertown continued to pound away at the Cats in the second quarter as Cyclone quarterback Jamie Navarra hit Tom Stiles from 10 yards out to pad the lead. Phillips and Tremont both scored on 15- yard touchdown runs to bring the first half to a close with the Wildcats trailing, 25- 6. Gouvemeur got burned early in the third quarter on a per- fectly executed 55-yard Stiles- to-Tremont, halfback-option pass that closed out the Cy- clone scoring. The Cats con- tinued to march deep into Watertown territory on fine runs from Phillips and Forrest Hays (ninecarries for 52 yards). Wildcat quarterback Brian Porter completed nine passes on the night for 58 yards, but by the time Phillips found the end zone again, with just over three minutes to play, it was too late. The Wildcats close out their season this Saturday as they host the St. Lawrence Central Lames JUNIOR VARSITY With perfect weather condi- tions and a nice crowd on hand the Gouvemeur Wildcat JV football team tangled with the Watertown Cyclones on LaFalce field Saturday. After battling to a first half 6-6 lie, turnovers plagued the Cats in the second half as they were eventually turned back, 18-6. Joel Baer once again led the Gouvemeur offense scoring their lone touchdown on a 41 - yard re verse in the firstquarter. Other fine performances were turned in by halfback Jim Minkler, and the quarterback tandem of Ronnie Centofanu and Kevin Currier. The defense was led by Chris Carr ( one interception), Ryan Martin, MauBishop, Dave Harper, and Joel Baer. The Littiecats close out their season Thursday afternoon with a game at SL Lawrence Central.
