Page 2- Gouverneur Tribune-Press Wednesday, Nov. 7, 1990 Rec. Committee fund-raising Continued from 1 Mr. Hudson said under ihe proposal being worked out, which he stressed is 4i one possible way the village could work with the committee to assure funds from the village/' \monies would be available for specific uses.\ He added that if the scenario is accept- able, one of the details that uould be worked out is at what point funds would be available to the committee. A recreational fat ility is one of the few uses allowed by the Department oi Hous- ing and Urban Development for I DAG repayment monies. The village has al- ready received some S155,OW m I'DACl repayment funds from E.J. Noble Hospi- tal, and has pledged $300,000 for a rec- reational facility, the amount the village board was willing to commit w hen appl> - ing for a state matching grant to fund such a project. .Preliminary plans for the proposed multi-use recreational facility call for a 3(X)- by 120-foot steel building, which would be large enough to aecomodate a regulation-si/.e ice rink for hockey and ice skating. Dr. Saidel, however, said by no means would the facility be limited to .ice activities, suggesting that when the ice was moved back the proposed building could be used for concerts, trade shows, car shows --\the possibilities are almost endless.\ The committee proposes to construct the building on a six-acre parcel ot vil- lage-owned land on Route 58, opposite the Harry Mills Park, and to one day constriK t a w alking bridge across the river to connect the two, opening the door for further waterfront development. The committee has estimated the shell structure would cost some $250,000 for materials alone. The total costs would depend on the amount of donated materi- als and labor the committee could secure. Dr. Saidel said the committee expects to receive an answer on its tax exempt ap- plication within a month and that the committee will meet to begm planning its fund-raising strategy within that timclranie. Meanwhile Ciouvcmcur Town Super- visor Donald Peck has pledged his per- sonal support oi the idea ot the town helping to finance such a project. Al- though the town ha> not yet been ap- proached for a contribution u> the pro- posed proicvl, Mr IVvk said he person- ally believes such a lauius should be a joint el Ion ot the \ illage AI\L\ the low n. The committee also ha> nuK ated plans loapproacholher neighboring tins.nsatx>ut making a contribution to the proposed proiect. which would he anticipated to attract residents iron) outside ot (»ou- venieur.
