The funeral was held in St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. Fay W. Ager celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Ar- rangements were with Chateaugay Funeral Home. Surviving are his wife, Monica, formerly of Rossie; a brother, Patrick Burke, Chateaugay; three sisters, Mrs. Pater (Mary) Abbass, Carthage, Ann Burke of Sch- enectady and Catherine Burke of Chateaugay; two aunts, Rose Burke and Katie Mel- lon, both of Chateaugay, and several nieces and nephews. Born July 8, 1936 in Malone, he was a son of Wil- liam and Gladys Ryan Burke. On July 9,1966 he married the former Monica Gardner in Patrick's Church, Rossie. He had been an operating engineer with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 673 in Orlando, Fia, for the past several years. He and his wife had lived in Oviedo, Fla., since 1983 and returned to the Chateaugay area in May 1990, where he had been employed as a truck driver with Cowans Construction. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, a mem- ber of the Moose Club in Pine Castle, Fla., former member of the Chateaugay Fire De- partment, Johnson Hunting Club, Cold Springs Hunting Club and the Bishop Wadhams Council Knights of Colum- bus in Chateaugay. GOUVERNEUR — The funeral for Margaret A. Mor- rison, 52, a resident of the North Country Transitional Community Homeat 18 South St., Gouvemcur was Sunday at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home with the Rev. Bernard Jakubco, parochial vicar at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, officiating. Burial was in North Watertown Cemetery. Mrs. Morrison died Oct. 31 at the Edward John Noble Hospital in Gouvcrneur. She is survived by three sons, Randy of Florida, George of Buffalo, Dennis Jr. of Wa- icrtown; and a sister, Vera Booth of Ulica. She was born June 22,1938 in Watenown, the daughter of Dons Lcnway. She attended Watertown schools and mar- ried Dennis W. Longway Feb. 18, 1961 at the parsonage at Bethany Methodist Church. The marriage ended in divorce. Mary E. Hill Marion K. Gross GOUVERNEUR — Mar- ion K. Gross, 77, Pleasantville, formerly of Gouverneur, died Oct. 21 at Mount Kisco Hos- pital, Mount Kisco. The body was cremated. Ar- rangements were with the Cassidy-Flynn Funeral Home, Mount Kisco. Surviving are two sons, Lawrence T. Ill, Pleasantville, and Roger S., Purdys; four grandchildren; a brother, Paul T. Sullivan, Gouverneur, and several nephews and nieces. A brother, William \Bad\ Sullivan died before her. Born in Gouverneur on March 26,1913, a daughter of Dennis and Ma^ Canfield Sullivan, she was a 1930 graduate of Gouverneur High School, attended New Roch- elle College and received a bachelor of arts degree from New York University in 1934. She married Lawrence T. Gross Jr. on April 12,1936, at St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. Donald S. Gal- lagher officiating. The mar- riage ended in divorce. Mrs. Gross wrote book re- views and poems for the Gouverneur Tribune Press in the \Crumbs From My Attic** section, under the pen name of Kay Sulla. She was later em- ployed with Street & Smith Publishing Company, New York, in editorial department and with the Scarsdale Enquirer as managing editor. She served as past president of the Pleasantville Contem- porary Club and helped form the emergency service unit which later became the Pleas- antville Ambulance Corp. Miss Shepherd died Oct. 29 in Carthage Area Hospital, where she had been a patient since Oct. 24. She had been in failing health one year. Surviving are two brothers, Herbert E. Born Nov. 12, 1912, in Al- gonquin, daughter of Lome E. and Ada Bennett Shepherd, she moved with her family to the Evans Mills areaat the age of 12 and was educated in a pink schoolhouse in the town of Leray. She then was gradu- ated from the Remington Business School, which later became the Watenown School of Commerce. For 33 years, she was em- ployed by the New York Central Railroad in Watertown as a dispatcher for the uhole engine crew and later as aclerk for whole freight office. She retired m 1963, and after her retirement moved to her pres- ent address. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Alexandria Bay. and a 25-> ear member of the Daughters of the Americar Revolution. DePEYSTER — The fu- neral for William John Allen. 93, Kinney Nursing Home, Gouverneur, formerly of De- Peyster, Star Route, was Sat- urday at the Fox Funeral Home, Heuvelton, with the Rev. William Masters offici- ating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Heuvclton. Mr. Allen died Oct. 29 at the nursing home. Born Nov. 2, 1896, in the town of Gouvemeur, son of Charlesand Martha Campbell Allen, he was an Army vet- eran of World War I, serving as a corporal. He first married Nellie Campbell. The marriage ended in separation and she died in 1954. He marrieu Jennie Cunning- ham Yenton Todd Aug. 1, 1979. She died May 30. He lived most of his life in the Gouverneur and Wcgatchie areas, u here he was bartender for many years. Alter his second marriage, he lived in DePeyster unul entering the Cedars Nursing Home. ANTWERP —A graveside service for Alice May Owens, 101, former Antwerp village clerk, was held Saturday at Hillside Cemetery with the Rev. Frank I. Smith, pastor of the Gouverneur United Meth- od I st C h urc h, O file i at ing. Miss Owens died Oct. 24 in the New Horizon Share Home, Winterhaven,Fla. Surviving are a brother, George Owens, Gouverneur; nieces, nephew s and cousins. Two sisters, Gertrude Hagerer and Dorothy Plait, died before her. Born March 2, lSy>, in Antwerp, daughter of Charles and May Mam Owens, she was graduated from Antwerp High School and attended Antwerp Teachers' Training Class. She taught for one year at North Wilna, and was gradu- ated in 1901 from Syracuse University with a degree in library science. She attended her 75ill S\racuse University class reunion in 1985. She was later employed as a postal deputy in Antwerp and worked for the Bank of Phila- delphia and the Bank of Antwerp. She had been Antwerp village clerk and was employed as office manager for Durkee's Bakery, Cartilage, for 12 years, retir- ing in 1956. Miss Owens had resided in Florida for many years, first in Lakeland and later Winter- haven. She was a member of the Antwerp Order of the Eastern Star, the Antwerp Rebekah Lodge, the United Methodist Church, and was formerly a trustee of the Antwerp Library. Robert J. Freeman HEUVELTON — The fu- neral for Robert J. Freeman, 66, of 18 State St., was Mon- day at Fox Funeral Home w ith the Rev. Roy Ward officiat- ing. Burial was in Hillcrcst Cemetery, Heuvelton. Mr. Freeman died Friday at his home. Donations may be made to the Heuvclton Volunteer Fire Department and the American Cancer Society. He was born June 10, 1924, in Endicott, to Delbert and Alice Ruger Freeman. He was educated in Endicott and was a veteran of World War II.
