3R.amapo Valley Gazette e IDEAS FROM A iW COM PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY J. B. G e e g o r y , Publisher. Entered as second class matter March 6, SI908, at the post office at MonroP, N. Y., mnder the Act of Congress o f March 3, 1879. M onroe , N. Y. April 24. ’08 IHERS OF POPOICINIESI. Public Criticism vs. Personal Slander. That the criticism of the street manners of ahe present generation ol the Monroe young *irls as set forth in Mr. Seely Bull’s letter dat- '•*«d April 8th has taken root in one intellect of « different understanding is evident in the an jswer signed E. V. L. That, in this particular case, Mr. Bull's effort will bear fruit is dot as to whether public discussion of such ques tions produce better and more lasting results «n the youth of a tender age, than aless harsh anethod would. But then Mr. Bull seems to aim his forces more at the parent than at the In,open and clean cut. His accusation was general, and not3t personal. His thougl dedly and persoi anindedly a well express* he was courteous d did not seek p ambiguous initials. The article b> suggestive of le attack on Mr. Bull’s personal charac- enough to sign bis name and did not seek protection behind bis or some i anind, ill adi bis or some ambiguous initials. ' is suggestive of a selfish, narrow ter seems as unjust as it was uncalled for, and is to regretted. The editor would do well to onsign such personals to the the official bask- munity tl ildhavebe There is a feeling such an article as Mr Bull’s should have been left to a more mature mind, with a family •training experience. This point of view has its merits and should be approac' e I with due 'ike a poor excuse lor a tecausesome older married, man fails to respect; but it seems 'ike to neglect his duty ai le older married, man the interest. Mr. Bull saw what he thought IS his duty; he had the ability of.expcessi and the strength to make known his convict ions. In return he is personnlly attacked. £ut that is the way of man. To conserve the dignity of the community, roadminded, general discus- d the press, b in should not g M alvin H. H a u . Lake Mombasha. There are few readers of this paper, who have not heard of Lake Mombasha and its beautiful surroundings. Those who have heard of it, but who have never seen it, not imagine, what it means to be on on ideal apot of this earth. I spent my Easier holidays there with my ■wife, on the farm of Mr. Kuehn’s, who is as- •?i5ted by Mr. & Mrs. Owtler. Tht »lotie, who are the most pleasant ones i cable, arc worth while the trip. Many a day we spent there fishing svith a great deal ol luck, or rowing around 'e found a shady spot, a nap in the soft grass, e then after a good row came back I, where we got off iind took a Whe we then after a gooc and heard the dinner bell we certainly made ior the dini- g room. The meals arc excellent the freshest vegetables of the season right from the farm, milk and eggs, home made bread, all this in plenty. Kuehn's is a great place. Nothing will turn a prospective new-comer away from a village as quickly as an unclean or untidy condition of the streets and of business, from which they form pression of the thriftiness of the business men and the executive ability of the town or vil lage government, passing through oi wiih its beaut ful sidewalks and reels, has been favorably com mented upon by the travelling public while through on the various local and ex press trains daily. There was a valuable piece of property sold, just on the outskirts of the village, early this week to a New York gentleman roperty in this section, but simply “alighted om the train here to look around,” he hav ing formed a favorable impression while pass ;e on his way farthe mg through west last While real : values have increastd through,” fold in the past few years, the impressions” formed by the “ passers I multiply if the ptes lined; and how to will tend maintained; and how to do this IS a very simple proposition. Let the Board of Trustees order cans of the standard size and shape, have them nicely painted and neatly lettered—“M. I A.'' .Monroe Improv.ment A^Sl.ciation) placed at regular intervals along Main street, and se cured by lock and chain in order that the mischievous element could not seriously dam age them; then have each business man or resident keep the sidewalk directly in front of his premises swept clean, lawns well cropped, show windows spotl ss, street •prinkled and free from papers anti broken Once each week—Friday, or early Satufday morning, as would best suit the cunvenien.e of the Street Commissioner—let each individ- ual property owner or occupant use a hue or rake with as much ambition as his size and weight and general physical condition will permit without affecting his heart, in cleaning the gutter and putting the road-wash in o pile, and by doing this it would greatly 9 the Commissioner in removing the cubbi whili not materially interferring with his other duties for the day. His regular men with the regular teams could do this work in a couple of hours each week. The fruits of this labor would become man ifest before the season fairly begins by multi plying the number of \first impressions” as the summer exodus from the city daily en- All good citizens should favor this move ment to make our beautiful village resemble the mythical “Spotless Town” as nearly as is at but little expense, and 1 feel sure that you, Mr. Editor, will give space to any one desir ing to comment on this subject through your happy medium.
