,· I ., Business Reverses' One would expect a man capable of governing the huge state of California to be fairly knowledgeable about money. Indeed, Ron- ald Reagan does seem, in his public statements, reluc- tant to improve budgets for welfare and higher educa- tion. It's probably the fault of the times that the cost of running California keeps ris- ing, even in his economy- oriented administration. Yet somehow Mr. Reagan, while admitting he paid no California income tax in 1970 and that he had rebates from the Federal IRS in the past two years, says it was be- cause he had \business re- verses.\ Just w bat they were, he doesn't explain. In 1968 Mr. Reagan sold a ranch for a sum said to have been $2,000,000. In 1970 his salary as governor was $44,- 100. In his position, he must have access to pretty good financial advice. At least, it was obviously good enougb to keep him from paying a state tax. So it seems rather odd that he had \business reverses. Poor folks who do pay -taxes on incomes a lot small- er than $44,ioo a year may wonder whether Mr. Reagan really has a bead for busi- ness. Maybe be lost money in the market. Maybe be was dumb like a fox, because obviously he beat the tax collector. It's no skin off us in Mass- achusetts if the governor of California pays no tax. But we may be permitted a little curiousity as to whether a weU-paid fellow whose pri- vate money ventures have lacked success is qualified to conduct the dollars-and-cents affairs of the most populous state in the Union. -Boston Globe Saturday Jrash Haul ---~· '\\··•'-·· . .., .. The Village Board last night approved a suggested plan of- fered by Public Works Supt. Wayne Ward and endorsed by the board's DPW committee calling for elimination of Saturday pick- up of trash in downtown Medina. A saving of up to $3,000 per. year is seen, according to the board since a crew has been at work Saturdays on over-time to serve needs of merchants. Supt. Ward said, however, that merchants would continue to have two pick-ups per week, but they will be integrated with the regular Monday through Friday schedule. Wednesday will continue as the main pick-up day for all of downtown. Then, in addition, the south- . west segment of the business district will be served on Mon- days, the northwest segment on Tuesdays, the southeast section on Thursdays and the northeast section on Fridays. This will become effective the second week in June. Eastman Creates Thermo-Plastic ROCHESTER, N. Y. CUPI)- Eastman Chemical Products Inc. has introduced a new line of high performance thermo- plastics to replace cast metals and engineering type plastics. The new thermoplastics are made from polyterephthalates and are extremely resistant to abrasion and have ·high impact resistance, officials said. They are expected to be used in the aUtomotive, appliance, machin- ery and hardware industries.
