Dishes bearing Lafayette designs aro much sought by collectors and students of history; the print Ikmown as the \La- fayetto landing\ design bomg the most valuable. : In the foreground there aro guards mounted upon gnllnpmg horses, whila tho middle distance consists of ships, decorated with flags, of smaller and at the right a view of the pler andentrance to Castlo Garden, while the high lights of this china picture are supplied by heavy white clouds and stoke from the cannon in front. At the baso, in dark bluo letters aro the words, \Landing of Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York, Aug. 24, 1824.\ Flowing blue\ is, next to \willow. ware,\ the most commonly found of all cept for its rich dark coloring, although every collector likes to have at least one perfect piece. Davenport ware of an carlier date, with its fino dark bluo and clear white, is much more desirable. It has an oblong mark, with \Amoy\ printed in the center- and \Davenport\ just under it, and each piece bears the anchor mark--an ruchor with '\Daven- port\ ina half circle abovo it. This matk is impressed in the china. A few years later a fair imitation of this chinn was made. The coloring, however, 14 not nearly ns good, and the design-of the Chinese garden scene with tho man- darins and umbrella is blurred. . Light blue \Longport\ ware is fine and attractive in shape. The washbowl and pitcher of this ware aro especially refined-& thin, light stono china of graceful form. Parts of dinner sets aro now and then found, aithough they aro apt to be discolored. A dinner sot of \Davonport\' ware, a sprigged china tea set and a full seb of ''Lorigport'' ware formed: the outflé of a bride of 70 years ago.\ There werealso water and: cream pitchers of copper luster, Among the cupboard treagpres n cider mug and tray of brown. pottery aro now and then unearthed. Thero is w redundancy of ornament in the autamn millinery, but prinoipal- ly directed in tho way of feathers. 'Too many could hardly be crowded on to Bho sides of bats, toques or bonnets. Strangely enough, on tho very latest and most ohio hats from Paris, no. loss ban on the creations of the leading ndon milliners, long, graceft plumes are to be seen, pluifes which H1 AUTDMN mummy follow the lines and carves of the wide boat shaped brims, exactly as they, were wont to du who shall say how many years ago? One cannot deny that there is a great 'charm about this form of trimming; for the soft haulers seam to fall of themselves into graceful posi- tions. They soften every harsh and un- becoming outline and help to form the prettiest of all settings for a protty face. Given four or five long ostrich feathers of good quality, and you have ample trimming for almost any kind of hat It seoms yory probable that these long ostrich feathers will play a most impor- tant part in the millinery of the imme- diate future. Hats which do not have plumes have wings or an occasional whole bird. White wings are much worn. One of the favorite novelties of the moment are quills with an-applique of lace up- on them. Trimmings .undor the brim aro still placed on the most dresiy form of hat. Bonnets have gained in favor sinco the jubilcs, as the Indies of tho royalty. appeared at tho public functions in bonnets, not bats. Still it is believed that hats will hold their own, although the bonnet is asserting its power.
