B osi . yn , W ash., May 12.—The under- one of popular feeling is ono of general censure of the local company, and there decided disposition to hold i t respon sible for the death of the 48 men who definitely known to have perished in accident at mine No. 1 of the North- Pacific Coal Company at this place Tuesday. D uring the past two weeks George Harrison, whose work a s leader of the rescuers has beeu superhum an, has been acting superin tendent pending the a ppointment of nn- Tho slope in which the disaster oc curred was a new one, being driven in for the development of the mine. A t in tervals of 300 feet along its length, levels wereJruQ laterally from the m.ain slope. Main ways were being driven parallel to the slope from different levels in order to establish a draft and prevent fire damp. There was 150 feet of this yet to be completed when the explosion oo- • Twenty bodies have so far been recov ered. In conversation Supd. Harrison said th a t in his opinion the explosion oc curred either in the sixth level west, or in the seventh level east, and his theory Is th a t some of the miners struck a drill hole full of gas and water, the former :oing the latter out and b ringing i t in atact with the m iners’ lamps. He is _ nvinoed th a t every miner who was at work on either of the three levels a t the tim e of the explosion is dead. The bodies recovered are burned, a in some instances badly charred. Others show that death resulted simply from concussion. I t appears th a t those who were on the upper levels sustained greater m u tilation than those lower down. It is thought th a t the lower levels are free from fire, from tho fact th a t the interior air is growing purer It is now positively stated th a t the Slate mine inspector has n o t inspected the mine since the explosion occurred there six weeks ago. This announce m e n t has created considerable surprise and excitement. The mining company is taking active measures to relievo the distress which prevails to a large extent among the families of tho victims of the disaster. The Prince’s symptoms were such that he and the Princess feared that they m ight indicate the existence of an ail m e n t sim ilar to th a t for which Sir Mor ell had treated the late Emperor Fred erick of Germany.
