R A B Y C O A C H E S alogue, and state datis of goods yoa wish 1 MRS. CARSON GETS BLUE. Does thunder affect eggs that are incu bating' y I should think it does: most em phatically it does. Stirs 'em up, makes the embiyo chick or turkey lively, hardy vigorous, sagacious, long winded, and above all, long lived. Causes them jump out of the shell two, or perhaps three d tijs before due, feather rapidly, take less care, and quick to mature. Poultry breeders should make a note of this, and consult Ayer’s almanac, or some other equally as reliable in regard to thu der storms, when setting hens, as it will be to their advantage financially (it is to rac.) I will relate a circumstance, a fact never theless, to corroborate my assertion. A thunder storm and getting chil'ed combi nation. You can believe it o r not just as vou feel about ir. But don’t forget to communicate your don’t believe opinions though, then we will imagine we were mistaken, and there was j o hen sitting, and no thunder storm, and we hid under the bed seventeen hours just for fun. W e have no settled opinions of our own, none to speak of, and a good solid argument will convince us either way, and being the happy possessor of one o f the best Matured and sunniest dispositions of any one in this world (no exception), no offence will be taken when intended. Bat the little canard. Yes, O, yes, we are coming. But it is not a cana>d, my unbelieving friends ’Tis a simoa pure fact, cu’-and- dfied. A few years ago (as the story goes) we had a turkey hen, sitting on turkey eggs, of course (nothing strange in that), juPt on the o utside of a yard near a gate. The yard was surrounded by a high picket fence (and is to this day, something strange in that, though) Oa iusitle oi yard, not a rod from ti e turkey’s nest, was a hen’s n est (just an old scrub hen), in appearance resembiing theturkev nest. One evening, about four o’ilcck, as a heavy storm was brewing, the turkey came off to feed and was fed by myself. I always do such things, and that is not so wearysome as doing housework (this is a secret and I don’t want the hired girl to know it.) The prevailing high wind blew Che gate shut, which led to the turkey nest. It was unobserved by us, as we died away to a safe retreat, bid ding the old tnrk good-by, and take keer yo’ self. W ell, the next morning, about nine o’clock, as we ventured out of our hiding, what should we see but the tu r key hen sitting on the hen’s nest, trying to hatch o ut some k ind of a new breed of chicks out of a procelain nest egg. We mentally repeated a line something like this : “ What fools we mortals be,\ only more forcible. W o m i ant ourselves, o course, having reference to the norm. We felt rather blue as we proceeded to tbe turkey’s nest to investigate. Sal down beside the nest, utterly oblivious of oui catcli-as-catch can toothache in our Bto-v t uth, but gaining strength we felt o( the V n.x,s, which were as cold as an ics- beig, seventeen hours basking in tbe rain, a'l alunc in the pitiless storm. Poor little u .i ’.cdn '1 orphans. We mustered up eiEjugh I ' irage at last to break one of the eggs. V elJ, Llieve me or not, the em bryo f.. kjy was as lively as an Indian po jy. Wo felt bluer then than we did before, if that wera possible. It did not take fwfutj-t'our hours to get that turkey hen back onto her eggsaafain, I assure iou. Well, in due time, which was near ten (lajF, ivei-y fertile egg hatched. In e y were as nice and lively as any turkpyp I ever had, but they were not in- bred wealdinge to start with though. B at let me tell you right hire, friend, it will take the •'’^ind out of chicks or turkeys if chilled the first few days o f incubation, sure as you live. But what puzzled us at that time, and does yet, is how came the lurk-in-the-shell to survive that star com bination ( is we thought) Bow did they escape being killed by chilling, or friglit- em d to death by the terrific thunder, as the heavy north« ester vras a stunner, so to speak, and passed dircc’ly over. Yes, it rather s‘ emed to hover round, and reach oui, and make random jerks atd passes a t that unprotecied orphan asylum. I am positively sure it was the thunder alone, and nothing else, that saved those embryo turks’ lives, by not permitting 'bem to fall asleep from the chilling i-fiects ol the cold northwester, and dii ting away to the happy hunting grounds of all good prize-winning tur keys. ■ W hy, the thumier was a raatmee got up for their vnot ours) espLcial bentfi’, kept them brightened up and lively as a seventxm-ycar-old sp ing chicken. Cuicks may s'‘'metimes smother i'l tbe bhell in h o t sultry weathci’, v.h'cb piecedes a thunder storm, but as to beii.p shook up end kil> d by thunder, ’tis all nonsense. W e lake no stock in Ihatthio-y, with all due respect to adverse opinions, however. (Won’t you please hide me Mr. Editor. I t< ar a m o b ) I did not thii k this wcnl.) \wv-olovc. Some attended the d ys services at church, a gcod many family gatherings took place aind a large number of turkeys were e iten. In the evening our young people enjoyed themselves attending the dances, balls and parties at tne neighboring villages .......
