THB PO RT’JBR VIS DAILY UNION, M O N O A f iV S N I N O . DEOSM B E RlO, 1888 AK IN C E N IO V S j O F luree S m a r t TTricte* G e t H i m O u t o f j D u r a n c e V i l e . j At an early hour last Friday morning j John Brown, who recently plead guilty to the charge of stealing a horse, made a most perilous and daring escape from the jail of th» county. Brown by some means ob tained possession of some wire, with which he made a netting under and close to the top ef a table in one of the corridors of the prison and into which he crawled just prior to the locking of the cell doors. After the performance of this duty Jailer Reed retired, but made his usual round about midnight, when all seemed right. Ko sooner, how ever, had the jailer disappeared than Brown descended fi’om his place of concealment, and after wrenching from its fastenings a long section of gas-pipe he climbed up on to one of the galleries— disr int, perhaps, twenty-five feet from the li -t> y glass sky. light. First bending the t <- of the pipe into the form of a hook he t :i punched a hole iu the glass large e n o u g h to admit of the passage ot his body. T h m hooking the pipe on the framework, he ascended, hand, over h a n d to the aperture. Once here the pipe served him a •’onble purp( Pulling up the pipe he again fastened took as bef'i-;i- vnd by its aid be descended the Steen ! r roof to the stone gutter a t ' ■' ' Ten feet distant standi a derric’: ■ ' boring a water well for the jail - . , here the most perilous part of th -lormance occurred, toaooom- plish v.-liieh required a nerve of steel. Knowing that the crash of glass would cer tainly be. heard and that his hope of escape admitted of no delay, he unhesitatingly sprang in the darkness for the oross-pieoea on the derrick, one of which, fortunately for Mm, he succeeded in grasping. Having once been a sailor, the descent to t Anna by the aid of the braces was an easy matter. Once do^vn it was not difiScait to elude those who had been attracted to the spot by the noise made by the crashing of the glass. Had he missed his hold he eould not have escaped instant death, (he distant to the ground is about sixty feet. It is well known that the grand jur- has upon different occasions recommend: the placing of a heavy wire screen under toe frame of the skylight with a view to better security, but the Commissioners have seen proper to neglect the performance of 8 simple duty and the above io tha lo. A Br*Jt»y Wltli Xwo Brca.fl*, A French couple by the name of Reonl- beault, living in Manchester, N. H., for year past, are said to be tin jiarenta of a genuine freak of nature Mr. and Mr». Reoulbeault left town on the Montreal e»- press for Canada recently, having with them two children, one a bright little fellow three or four years old and the othbr an infant in arms. The former seemed perfectly well formed and was apparently as active and healthy as any child in Manchester. The infent, however, is reported by several per sons who saw it at the passenger station to- be a genuine monstrosity. The little one, cow four weeks old, is asserted to have two perfectly formed heads, joined at the body by short, but well formed necks. The lower portion of the body and limbe are said to be regular and well proportioned ?aUll ‘ht and tbat the child's lungs were a rig was evinced by its freqxient cries and screams. It is said that it cries alternately -with one mouth and then with the other, and that it can close one pair of eyes while the others ore open. The parents are abnormally sen sitive in regard to their strange offspring and, as fax as possible, have kept its b a secret. This sensitiveness is said to ho the cause for the departure of the family for Canada. The child seemed perfectly strong and healthy, and partook of nourish ment vrith an avidity and appetite which spoke well for its future growth .—Chicago imple duty and the above - Qreenshwra Argvut. \When you wake up in the night and »e baby crying, look out for dai It costs only 25 cents.
