Prof. Cjllier, in a recent bulletin of the New York Station, makes some excellent suggestions regarding what are termed branch stations. This is being done in several of the States, or at least in Con necticut, quite succefsfuiiy, and \will un doubtedly be the means o f much good to both farmers and the work of the stations themselves. There is very much in the line of experimental work, such ae de termining the results produced by differ ent fertilizing substances upon different soils, etc. This work can be conducted by intelligent farmers in the different sec-1 tions ot the country under the general supervision of the director o f the central state station. In this way not only will the work of the station be largely ex tended, but its influence upon farmers as It class greatly increased. Farmers shouP interest themselves in this matter, and if the stations do not make any propositions for conducting such experiments, they shou d demand that it b e done and offer to aid in the work. Such work becomes i important means of agricultural edu- Germantown Telegraph, POTATOES AND FLAT CULTURE. Some twenty years ago, we performed a series of experiments on. the potato, a part with h ills or cones of earth drawn up around the plants, and another part with flat culture. The m en who per formed the labor predicted failure in the absence o f “ hilling,” and were much sur prised to find on digging the potatoes that the flat culture gave about fifteen to twenty p t r cent, more tubtrs. Since that tic-e a number o f experimenters have reported similar results, and among them Prof. Roberts o f Cornell University, and the Rural New Yorker. W e observe in a late number of the New Yo k Tribune the statement of Galen Wilson, of Tompkins county, N. T , who h as experimented for some years, that in a field of potatoes, planted in rows three and a half feet apart, with hiils a foot and a half from each other in the rows, and with flat culture, the hills averaged seven large tubers to the hill, at the same tim e that. When the earth was drawn up to pointed hills, only five good potatoes were found in the hill.--01o«niry GenUeman. OLEOMARGARINE. Whenever respectable industries like those represented at the American P a t Stock Show are conspiciously before the public, oleomargarine flaunts its nastiness in close proximity. It is therefore a good time to remind the public that the Western Rural once had a fine specimen of oleamargarine—the best th a t was man ufactured m the country-examined under the microscope and that it was demon- sU’a^t d that tbe lying mixture was full of creeping things and d i r t W o still have c'lts that were made from th a t examina tion, and they are wonders to behold. We find the following article in the W, B. Homestead pecks to a bushel of rich bran to each large tub or barrel of swill, scalding it thoroughly and leaving it a day or two to idergo the first stages of ferm\ntation in the stomach d uring d gest bad eff. cts will soon become app«rpnt. Equal parts of corn and oats greurd to gether and used in slop is often superior to bran, and causes an increased amount of pork. Corn and meal thoroughly scalded and then made into swill in tbe proportions given is excellent. Old swine raisers have found tha rotten wood thrown into the pen, for thi Digs to eat at will, is often very beneficiaL In changing from one food to another, judgment should be exercised and the lange made gradually. This is an old error or superstition— the idea that good, sound grain feed Is a better food for swine, after it has fer mented and turned sour. We have al ways aimed to give swine their feed as fresh and sweet as possible and we have never noticed that it ferments in the Stomach instead of digesting. Certainly it will not do so in the stomach of a healthy hog. It is equally certain that fermenting the food destroys a part of its feeding value. Then why practice it ? COMPETITION BENEFICIAL. Nothing is more beneficial than friendly rivalry. If one farmer raises a large crop, dis neighbor should try to excel i t ; if one gets a superior cow, or pig or other ani mal, all should strive to get a better one. Nothing makes a man try to do his level best (to knuckle dowp close, as the boys say), so much as a knowledge that some one is trying to excel. S ) long as this is done in a friendly spirit it results in great good to all. Now, nothing aids one so much in excelling as knowledge. He who knows most, and who applies his knowledge to his work, is always the best workman. This is as true o f tbe farm as the shop.
