THE PORT JER VIS JDAILY UKIOH, FBI DAX BVENINO, SEPTEMBER 21, 1888,'’ CliEVEtiAND IS FOR H ltli. An Onqnaliiiea Endorsement of Hill’s Iniquitous Record. Ex-Senator John J. Kieman reports Mr. Cleveland as being very much grati fied with the renomination of Governor Hill, and with the strong unamity and spontaneity of the sentiment by which it was brought about, and as having no i^ympathy with the mugwump opposition toHilL So Cleveland indorses Hill, ballot re form veto, campaign note, illegal sub contract, and all. This ,is worse than writmg the Fellows letter ; for the Gov ernor of New York state is a more im portant official than the District Attorney of New York county. He has no sympathy with the mugwump opposition to Hill. He has no sympathy with the indignation of the public’s moral sense at the Governor’s corrupt sale of a contract. He has no sympathy with the laboring man whc«e political rights were trodden on by Hill’s ballot reform veto, in the interest of big campaign assessments and boodle corruption funda He approves of saloon domination and saloon nomlna- \ Evidently Mr. Cleveland is rattled. His civil service hypocrisy, and his free trade unpatriotism, have driven away many'of his old friends, and now he is frantically bidding for the support of the lowest ele ments, in the hope of stemming the tidal Boys, we have them on the run. Make it a rout —V. i Y, Prm O F F IC IA I. FIG U R E S FROM M A IN E . Official returns of the Maine ek-ction have beeo received at the office of the Sec retary of State from all voting places save a few remote and unimportant planta tions. The result gives Burleigh, Repub lican, tor Governor, 79,513; Putnam, Deipocrat 61,018; Republican plurality on Gubernatorial vote, 18,495. The plu ralities for Congressmen are: First dis trict, Reed, S.43T; Second, Dingley, 5,- 473; Third, Milliken, 6.533; Fourth, Boutelle, 4,810. The Republicans have 31 Senators to none for the Democrats, and 1S5 Representatives to 36 for the Demo crats- Of 99 county officers, Probate dudges, County Attorneys, etc., the Re publicans elected 96 and the Democrats 3. T H E OLD ROMAN BEATS T H E W OBIiD. Mr. Thurman is the only man who ever carried on a handkerchief flirtation with 60,000,000 people all at once .—Chicago “ That infamous protective system ” was the phrase used by Senator Vest in his de bate with Senator Hoar last Friday. In the Becord of the following day the first two quoted words did not appear, proba bly for prudential reasons. Yesterday Senator Chandler referred to the omission, and Mr. Vest in a passion made an angry repetition of the phrase in his most offen sive manner. The words may not be in the Record, but they are hung up now where they can be easily obtained. In his objurgatory remark Mr. Vest voiced the feeling of bis party toward the American system which it is laboring to destroy.— Trog Times. T h e Feltou-TU o m as R u m o rs H iscussed by V ice-President T h o m a s . Speculations concerning Erie Vice- President Felton’s position continue to pop up here and there, and the following from an authoritive source in Cleveland, O., ought to set the matter at rest: ‘There is little doubt that Second Vice- President E. B. Thomas of the Erie road, will go to New York on October 1st to assume duty, but not as First Vice-Presi dent in place of S. M. Felton. The report, that Mr. Thomas is to be made general manager of the Erie system, while retain ing the title of Second Vice-President, is, substantially correct. Mr, Thomas has returned from New York where he has presumably been in consultation with the management of the road. He said: ‘ I do not care about discussing the rumors Gon- cerning Mr. Felton and myself. It is enough to say that I am not going to New York to become Fir.^t Vice-President of the Erie. Beyond that I can say nothing.’ When asked whether jt was not true that he was to be made general manager, Mr. Thomas said that he must be excused from answering that question, adding that the newspapers and public could draw their own conclusions. It is believed that Mr. Thomas’ promotion is the first step in a move to drive First Vice-President Felton from the Erie. From inside sources it is learned that a clique of brokers in New York, who are manipu lating Erie stock, have determined to oust Mr. Felton, and that Mr. Thomas, who, however, is entirely innocent of any complicity in the scheme, has been selected as the most available man to take the active management of the road off his hands.” D IH D WORDS. An Important Change in the New York R. 0. Jackson, superintendent of the railway mail service in New York city, was Wednesday dismissed from the de partment by the Postmaster General. Serious charges were brought against him two months ago, and an investigation was instituted. It was alleged by the complainant that money had been paid to a middleman as bonus for obtaining employment for a clerk in Jackson’s office. The latter de nied that he knew anything of the trans action, even if money had been paid, which was rews to him. Mr. Jackson has been 25 years in the postal service. He is succeeded by J. B. Given of Cin cinnati, who occupied a corresponding position in the west. Mr. Jackson says he knows of no reason for his removal. He is a Republican and his successor is a Democrat. F . X. Mr. Schoonmaker possesses extraordi nary ability as a popular and successful expounder of all questions relating to the tariff. His volumnous and exact know ledge of these subjects, coupled with his general utilty as a campaign speaker, will enable him to render the most important service to the Republican party this fall.
