FO R E S T S AND R A IN F A L L . J. A. Foote, of Crawfordsville, Ind., is skeptical as to the influence of trees andl forests in the production of rain in certain localities. He writes as follows to the IndUma Farmer : This has hei C U R E iBick Headache and relieve all the troubles Incl* dent to a bilious state of the system, such aaDlt* ziness. Nausea, Drowsiness, Distress after eating, Pain in the Side, &c. While their most remari' able succeiB has been shown in curing SICK Seadache, yet Carter’sLittle Liver Pills are e^ntOf valuable in Constipation, curing and nreventlng this annoying complaint, while they also correct all disorders of the stomach, stimulate the liver and regulate the bowels. Even if they only carei HEAD Ache they would be almost priceless to those wht luffer from this distressing complaint; but forttP nately their goodness does not end here, and those who once try them will find these little pills vala- able in so many ways that they will not be wUlInf to do without them. But after all sick head ACHE Is the bane of so many lives that here Is where w« make our great boast. Our pills curs it wMl« others do not. Carter’s Little Liver Pills are very small and very easy to take. One or two pills make a dose. I C A R T E K M E D IC IiyrE CO ., N o w York City., :en a wet summer. The rain same down yesterday, and to-day it has mring “ from early morn to dei leen pouring “ from early morn to dewy ve.” It reminds one ot 1875, when the is harvest 7 through- eve.” It reminds one ot 1875, when t wheat was mostly ruined and everything By the __ be nrinted it mav be month. Well, last year was dry throu/ out the summer as no one can fail member. One year is wet another When it is dry many cry out—yes, that what me may expect, the forests have been so denuded that it cannot rain. I think you, Mr. Editor, have hinted some thing of this sort—it seems to be a some what common opinion. Will you now be so kind as to tell us whether the forests have been restored? This Is not a child’s question—it is pertinent—it is unanswer able. If the want of forests was the cause of drouth last year why do not they jvent rain this year? The only possible iwer is that there are other and greater factors in, the case. That is exactly what I have all along contended for. The causes of rain and drouth are world wide, beyond man’s control, unless he can erect liarricades like the Rocky Mountains, in other directions across the continent, or pump the Gulf of Mexico dry, or do some such feats as these. The editor of the Indiana Farmer has grown skeptical, too. Read his comment on the above: tho l M iuc H ou oi vegfitatioaafldtlKj gteat fisk of life and pro{;erty by floods and freshets. On the other hand clouds of vapor passing over a country, the surface of which is kept cool ly vegetation, is cooled hy genial currents. The water in the clouds is condensed and gentle showers follow. The vegetation again prevents the rapid evaporation of the water. The roots and mosses absorb it, and the loose earth is saturated with moisture. Other showers follow, the water percolates through the loose earth and flows from the hillsides in cool, refreshing springs. There might have been drouth in Indi ana last year owing to the want of vege tation, and the scarcity of vegetation would not prevent the disastrous floods this year and in ’85. But the chances are that the influence of forests last j'car would have brought rainfall to that parched earth, and that in the other two years mentioned they would cause a more general and gradual distribution of the precipitation. To say that “ other factors” besides the universal laws of nature interferes with local precipitation, or that an “ all wise Rulei” arrests tho workings of His uni- versal law is superlative nonsense. The “ all wise Ruler” doesn’t trifle with his laws or his children. The IfetP York Tribune says : Colonel P. D. Curtis, appreciating the sheep, especially as a neglected but most profita ble resource of wholesome food, declares in Our Oouniry Home that henceforth the flock “ has got to stand on its own legs, and these must be mutton legs” thus suffl- ciently supported, it cannot only take care of itself, but enrich the hilltops of the farmer and bless his table with the best of meat. “ Those who have flocks of pure-bred Merinos should still keep their best blood and sell where they can; but not be dazed or crazed with the expectation of high prices. Do not sacrifice your flocks, but cut them down to the best. We should eat more lamb and mutton, and it may be a great blessing that it is necessary to push this side of the sheep interest, which should result in the rearing of better mut ton, more of it, and its presentation to the public in more attractive forms, and everywhere. Now beef is in the front, and the consumer sees little else, unless in the time of sausages, when pigs divide the space, but taking only a small part. Mut ton can really be grown cheaper than other meat, as the fleece will go far make up the cost of raising. No animal will grow faster in proportion to the food consumed than a lamb. The per cent of gain, as to cost, is the highest. Here is a good basis for the skill of the breeder. That word ‘ skill ’ is the key to the whole thing. One man will grasp it, and win, and another will not work up to it, and he will fail. Begin with a few and enlarge as your skill is developed. Keep some sheep, anyhow.” For over a dans have ^ Iron as a reliable and valuable remedy for )sia aud general debility. «L£A«IfiG3. We notice that some of the newspapers are inclined to make sport ot political conventions and political meetings in which women take an acUve part. If we were a politician or conducting a partisian paper, as partisan papers are generally con ducted, WO believe that we should have more sense than is manifested in this di rection. Women cannot vote, but the man who thinks that they have no influ ence, politically or in any other direction in which they seek to exert an influence, is exceedingly stupid. If a cause com mends itself to their judgment and sympa thies, it is exceedingly fortunate. They are tireless workers, and most of their work is done in that most successful way of doing political work, quietly. Their campaigns are largely of the buttonhole character. They have an immense influ ence, just as they should have, in their homes. It is creditable to a man to bo in fluenced by a high minded and noble woman, and discreditable to him to spurn her advice. If she has right and reason on her side, it will pay the man to listen to her. She has the parlor, the social circle, the church and many places in which she can do dfective work for what ever she is interested in. Anybody who thinks he can afford it, may despise her influence, if he likes, but we cannot afford to do it and do not intend to try to.— Westei'n Rural. The Connecticut State Grange is trying to arrange with certain western farmers’ organizations for direct shipments of grain from tne farms of the producers in Iowa, Nebraska, Dakota and elsewhere, to the farms of the consumers in the Nutmeg State. This effort to abolish middlemen and deal direct, is one of vast importance to the farmers of both the east and the west. Some of the Dakota wheat growers have been very successful during the past two years in their combinations to market their crop independent oE the elevator ring. If to this partial success can be added dirrect shipment in bulk to eastern consumers there should be a saving of sev eral cents a bushel at both ends of the line. The plan, to be conducted through an organization like the Grange in east and the Alliance in the west. By this means large quantities of grain can be se cured from the grower, and disposed of for cash among the subordinate granges of the scheme—large shipments and cash payments. There is here a wide field for usefulness for efficient organizations.— Amencan Agriculturist. It is not a question of party, but of men. The end will be reached when farmers, en masse, refuse to vote for men who ignore in practice what they promise in theory. Do not let the wool be drawn over your eyes by candidates. Do not take stock in fine-spun, one-sided talk by demagogues. There are two sides to every question. They oper ate yesterday and to-morrow, last year and through all future years the same. The conditions that Mr. Foote cites as being against the perpetuation of trees and forests are the very best arguments in their favor. No one claims that the de nudation of the land will absolutely pre vent rain and freshets. On the contrary it is the veij'condition that will produce freshets. The heat of the sun will ever cause evaporation of water. This must form in clouds, and as it passes over nude, parched country it must be heated more and more, thus increasing the capacity for holding water.
