THS POET JEEtlS DAILY DNION, PEI DAI EVENING, JULY 27, 1888 “IVHEEtl UBITISH SYMPATHY LIES An Able Newsvaper Comes Out for Cleve- laml and Frankly Tells Wliy. It is the intemion of the Republicans of the United States to fight the election on the question of free trade. The issue IS, unfortunately, a false one. Apart from the question, British sympathies can not fail to be on the side of President Cleveland. The Republicans have chosen to ally themselves with the declared ene mies of the country. They would keep open the Canadian fisheries dispute, and even render it more acute than it has ever been. Proposals have been made by them which, if they were carried out, would necessitate a tariff war between Canada and the United States, and place us under the necessity of giving effective support to the Do minion or of risking the loss of that great colony. There can be no doubt which of the two courses we should choose, espec- cially as the position taken up by the Re publicans is one that neither justice nor friendship can warrant. It is to be hoped, therefore, that the wise selection of the Chicago Convention will not lead to the success of General Harrison. To doubt his high qualifica tion as a candidate would be to doubt the wisdom of the caucus system. His chances are probably better than would be those of a better known man. He Las all the virtues which can be possessed by one of whose name the majority of the elec tors are ignorant. If he cannot win un der these conditions, it may be concluded that the vast majority of people in Amer- *ica are in every way friendly to the old conatsy.—Edinburgh JScoiman, of July Wth. PROVERBS A bo u t T'H^J^DEl{. If the birds be silent, expect thunder. If the cattle tun ai'ound stud collect to getherin the meadows, expect thunder. If the clouds grow rapidly larger, ex pect much rain and also thunder. Two currents in summer indicate tliun- If there be many falling stars during a clear evening in summer, expect thunder. Increasing atmospheric electricity oxi dizes ammonia in the air and forms nitric acid, which affects milk, thus accounting for the souring of milk by thunder. Thunder in the evening indicates much When it thunders in the morning it will rain before night. Thunder in the north indicates cold weather. Thunder in the north indicates dry weather. Thunder from the south or southeast in dicates foul weather; from the north or northwest, fair weather. With a north wind it seldom thunders. Much thunder in July injures wheat and barley. Thunder in the fall indicates a mild, open winter. Distant thunder speaks of coming rain. Boston Journal, NOVELTIES IN JEWELRY. A plain loop of silver cable cord makes an odd brooch. A fishing line and reel of silver is a reasonable design on match safes. A miniature base ball, either in silver or enamelled, makes a popular charm. A silver ostrich plume studded with diamonds makes a tasteful and brilliant brooch. Small silver frames with beaded rims are much admired as artistic photograph holders. A copper crab in the act of seizing small fish is a pleasing design on silver match boxes. Hat pins tipped with pearls now have numerous bright-hued insects clustered near the head. Silver toothpick cases are handy pocket articles for farm house boarders used to city conveniences. NINE DEAD FROM DIPHTHERIA. Wednesday the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Layton of Decker- town died of diphtheria. This was the ninth child they have lost by this disease within the last three weeks. The disease is very fatal there, only one person at tacked having recovered. In each case the patient has died of heart failure after convalescing. It is now thought that it is caused by -drinking impure water, which is drawn from a deep well near the out buildings. The well has been closed and a sample of the water sent to New York for analysis. Drills, per yard. Prints, per yard ...............
