J. N. K N A P P , Chairman pi’o tern HOUSE 0F_™ FUTURE. It was a lovely summer day, one of those that you can see the justice of call jng perfect, but the wind blew hard. I had picked up Uncle David’s chimney and his windows in the morning. You see we live on the Ridge, and the air is fresh there, veiy fresh, while the house is old. Consequently, whenever there’s a breeze, the bricks and the panes of glass just fly off and out. I had picked up everything till the yard looked as nice as a city lawn, and after dinner I went over to the ruined Methodist church, down on the cross-road, and sat down on the steps to think. While I was sitting there, along came Georgie Nash and Nell Beach. Nell is like one of those stars that fiish and sparkle, so you fancy they must be having a right good time up there ; but Georgie is like the day. She doesn’t sparkle, but it’s warm and light and pleasant where she is, and she makes you think of your mother. Madeline Augusta ! whatever are you doing here to-day ?” called Nell. Going around the mulberry bush,” I laughed. Georgie gave me a quick look, and then they both settled down by my side. Pioduce your bush and we’ll all go round together, and then we’ll take turns till we’ve worn it out,” said Nell. You’ll laugh at me, Georgie, h u t - well, i t ’s fancy work. It’s lovely here on the Ridge. I don’t believe there’s a bit of God’s earth that’s better worth livii or looking at, an d the women are in the house putting seventeen tucks in their white skirts or piecing silk crazy quilts till their eyes and backs ache. Or else they’re embroidering cat tails or making rick rack. I hale embroidered cat tails ! Why don’t they go out into the swamp and get some real ones if they want them? And rick-rack and fish-twine lambrequins and crazy quilts. I detest them all, all the crazy abominations.” Madeline, dear, what’s the real trouble?” It’s the pettiness of it. Georgie, Here where it does seem as if a woman couldn’t look out without taking in large views of the universe, thev turn their backs on it all to fuss with twine and scrap •. Do you remember in ‘ P ilgrim’s Progress ’ the fig ure that gathers up leaves and straw with his rake and will not look up to tiie angel and the crown that are just above his head ? It’a like that all the while. Why don’t they live instead of giving their own life foi that which is not meat ?” “ I t ’s SO,” said Nell. “ The very houses are crammed so full of things that you can’t turn around, aud you’ve got to spend hours dusting them. It’s all very well for the benighted dwellers in cities, but you and I don’t believe in it, do we, Madeline? Let’s get up a crusade against it all.” “ You needn’t laugh, Nell. I would like to see a house once that made you feel there was room enough in it to breathe. They can make as much fuu as they want to of the old Puritan bare rooms. There was something in those.” Not much,” said Nell, demurely. “ I rem e m b e r one of about an acre that had a sideboard, six chairs, a sofa and a center table in, and you fairly had to shout to your nearest neighbor, while an echo in the ceiling repeated your words with an unearthly iffect.” “ I don’t care. I’d like to go into a room where I don’t tangle up my feet in a Persian rug every step, catch every b u t ton on my dress in t'jvine lambrequins, knock over a rickety stand with a hideous little object on it, or an easel with its legs spreading half-w.iy acro.R the room, and sit down at last to stare at the family China, being upon the walls instead of be ing put in the china closet where it be longs. And Japanese ! I wish there’d never been any treaty with Japan I We don’t want their trash in our parlors Georgie, dear”—I had rested a little after my tirade—“ help me. It all seems so unreal, so small. There are solemn realities in the world, and out here, under that sky and with this air and this blessed sunshine above us, they seem not only solemn and grand, but xnfiuitcly sweet. I could understand how sorrow and joy, h and wrong, happiness and misery, might be only clouds floating in a deep sky o f blessed life and peace. But I go into the houses where the lesson should bear fruit, and I find that Amanda has made twenty-seven yards of rick-rack, and Jand has seventeen hundred pieces ot eilk in her crazy quilt, while both are too busy counting stitches and pieces to know that the forget me-nots are in blossom, and the fields below the house just blue w ith'the darlings.” But, Madeline, every little piece of work may fit into the great plan.” “ Not foolishness, Georgie. I don’t de spise small work that is work. I think it is good work to clear up a stony, unpro ductive field and make it blossom like the rose. But play that makes believe it is work and takes a person’s best energies is wicked.” They aren’t idle, any way,” said Nell, “ and you know ‘ Satan finds so tr e mlschlel still — Sometimes I think this is the mis chief. Suppose, Nell, the angels should spend their dsys embroidering their robes and tell the Lord they had no lime for his work because they wanted to copy a hunch of His beautiful cat tails on the front breadth ? I t ’s just that. They have no time for the work of the Lord because it’s all taken up in —” “ We’vecom e to it at last, Georgie. Madeline has raved and ranted as usual lor an hour, and now we h ave got to the point. What have the good ladies of the Ridge done or left undone that has set you eff, Madge ?” “ I suppose I was a little h o tter than necessary, but I couldn’t help it. You know Mr. BasUue spoke about our taking some poor children out here for a couple of weeks as we did last year. Well, the ladies have thought it over and conclude they can’t do it. ‘ They haven’t time to look after them as they should wish.’ I have been in ten places this afternoon and they said the same thing in every one and in every one they were making hideous macrame bags to string on arms, and paint ing satin pin cushions and squares for crazy quilts, and k n itting P ersian rag rugs, using up whole days in busy idleness, Things were nevt r meant to be that way- It’s all very well to use up the scraps that have to be made, but to spoil whole pieces cutting them into scraps. And there’s an other thing. May W inter us going to iriy that yoiirg minister, you know. And he’s had two calls, one to North Bridgeton and one to Upasville. Which do you think he’ll take ?” Left to hims-elf, North Bridgeton ; with May, Upasville, I guess,’’said Georgie thoughtfully. Yes, it’s Upasville. W hen she told mother of them I burst right out with, Oh, I’m so glad ! There will be some thing done in North Bridgeton at last.’ But she said so calmly and sweetly : ‘No, we are going to Upasville. I feel that there would be no society in North Bridge- ton and beside I cc uidn’t have the leisure I ought to have there, so I have induced Mr. Ray to accept the other call-’ ” What did you say then, Madeline ?” Oh ! I was horrid as usual. 1 said I was aware there was nothing attractive about North Bridgeton, except the souls to be saved, and that, if society was the principal attraction to me, I shouldn’t marry a man who pretended that all he wanted was to save s o u ls ! Mother stopped me, but May said, ‘ You will think differ ently about some things when you are a little older, Madeline.’ I hope I’ll never be older if that is the way I shall look at things. Society! a lot of other women tying hard knots in cord and simpering out directions for working long-legged storks. Leisure for that kind of work 1” “ There, Madeline Augusta, you have had your ssy. Georgie, it’s your turn. ” Well, dear,” said Georgie, “ there doesn’t seem to be anything that we can do about the fancy work you detest so much, BO I wouldn’t think of that. Now about the children, that’s the real mulberry bush, isn’t it ? Suppose,” and there was a gleam o f mischief in Goorgie’s brown eyes, “ supp m we go down to Mrs, David Burroughs ” and ask if we can hire the old farm house of hers for a week. Then we shall borrow things from every- where and fit it up as the House of the Future. You can be gently sarcastic, Madeline, in your arrangement of things. Then we’il invite the ladies to come and view it, paying an admission fee for the privilege. W ith the money from this loan exhibition ’ we can pay the board of two poor children, at least, at Mrs. Ran- stroth’s, and I know our mothers will each let us have one if we will take care of i t That will make five who will get out here for a breath of Ridge air ; shall we do it?’’ O Georgie !” cried Nell and I together. And I added, “ But mayn’t I fit up one room as a Room of the Past ?” “ Of course. But let’s go ask our moth ers right away,” Bo we did. And the three dear mothers listened as mothers always do to heedless, enthusiastic, sixteen-year-old daughters, demurred a little, and then tenderly gave permission and advice. “ I f everybody had been like our mothers, we wouldn’t have had this to do,” cried Nell, exultantly, as we harness ed Hiram to the light wagon. “ Never m ind,” said Georgie. “ Drive to Mrs. Burroughs’ as quick as you can, Nell. Put on your gloves, Madeline. W e must make as good an impression as pos sible.” “ T h e n I’ll have to keep still,” I said “ N m r m i n d . You shall do all the talking between places,” said Nell, con- Dgly. “ Georgie shall be spokesman, and I ’ll add dignity to the crowd,” We reached Mrs. Burroughs’ and were ushered into the parlor, where she sat cro cheting a lambrequin. “ Thank you, Mrs. Burroughs,” Georgie said in answer to her cordial invitation, we can’t stay ; our call is purely a busi ness one. Will you let us the Daniels farm house for a week ?” “ Let you the Daniels farm house for a week ?” “ Yes. You see the ladies o f the Ridge are so busy that they don’t feel they can take the poor children this Summer as Mr, Bastine wants them to. So we three girls thought we would rent that house of you and get up a loan exhibition of fancy things, crazy quilts, rugs and such things. We want to make it look as houses will look, we think, fifty years from now, and we’ll make one room as they used to be to show the contrast. Then we want to charge an admission fee ; and with what we have have left after paying for the house we will board two children at Mrs. Ranstrotb’s for a couple of weeks. I think we could get enough, don’t you ?” Why, yes, I should think so. And you can have the house and welcom e; but you shan’t pay anything for it. And if there’s anything of mine you want, you shall take it. I can do that much, I guess. (Continued on Third Page.)
