Arm strong, the popular proprietor of the Mil ford pharmacy, has added to the forme:’ attractiveness of his store by placing h handsome new soda fountain in the front. It was manufactured by Puffer & Sons oi Boston, Mass. It is a Tieauty, and the harmless and refreshing beverage wili doubtless be appreciated this summer by those accustomed to stronger drinks. Milford might well be called a village ol hotels, as there are now no less than 14 large structures that come under that head, t u t most o f them temperance houses. Only four hotel licenses were granted this year, and none fer saloons. Some houses voluntarily gave up the liquor business and some declined to take out license uu- der the present high license rate, which makes hotels $150. To say the least the moral tendency of this place is steadily upward. » A. D. Brown, our enterprising lumber dealer, has this day purchased of Mrs. Hart, the mother o f the Hart brothers of the late firm of Burk, Hart Brothers, & Co., the lumber bid in by her at the sheriff sale the 14lh inst, amounting to about 100,000 feet. Mr. Brown now has the control of the lumber business here. He was the pioneer dealer here and has out lived all his competitors. The late firm started business here about four years ago with a large capital, but failed to succeed. Mr. Brown has the facilities and location for getting his lumber out as cheaply as any location can be had here, and builders appear to be satisfied with his prices. He is erecting on his lot corner o f Broad and Catherine streets a frame building 40x100 feet, two stories in rear and three stories front which he will fit up for a dry goods and grocery store on first floor, a public hall, offices and a gymnasium on the sec ond flOOr and a SOCiety M l on the third floor. The store room he w ill occupy himself, the gymnasium r om will be occu pied by the Milford gymaasium club, but just who will use the t«^o offices and so- efety ball is not at present known. The old jail is undergoing thorough re pair, new floors, walls, cisings, etc , are being put in and when completed will make very comfortable and attractive quarters for the under sheriff. The watch case factory is doing a good business, notwithstanding the present lull in that branch of manufacturing. A large force is still employed an-d there are indications Of necessary reductions as are being done in so many places. On the contrary work has been given to new hands recently. sistan ce at the time of her confinement, on the 18Ui of last month. She was held in .f.5,000 for trial in the Superior Court at Oambridge, Juue l.st. She was taken to Cambridge, and was about to be put in jail when she obtained baih Oce hundred years ago, according to the Rutland Herald, the town of Wilton, N. H , passed the following vote : “ Tbai the town provide one ba rel West India rum. five barrels New Bigland rum, one barrel good brown sugar, halt a box good lemons, two loaves of loaf su|ar, for framing and raising sa’d meeting house.” Times have changed since then, and it c'oes not require so 'much rum to raise large buildings. —The Monticello Watchman says that measles, which made their appearance in Monticello, some two months ago, still continue to affl ct the people of that town. The disease is of a mild type, producing but little constitutional disturbance, but is peculiar because o f the fact that its favor ite victims of attack are those who have had the old-fashioned disease. Young children enjoy almost complete immunity from its attacks. The congregation of the llonesdale Pres byterian church has just increased Bev. Wm. H. Swift’s salary, unasked, $300, making it $3,000. Dr. Sage’s Catarrh Rvmedy cures when every other so-called remedy fails. —Surveyors engaged in laying out the route of the Kansas City, El Paso and Mexican railway in New Mexico have discovered the ruins of a prehistoric city. The appearances indicate that one of the buildings made of stone was four ac'es in extent. The priofs multiply that the western continent was old Jong before it was “ new” to Europe, and that arffte »1- ogy has no more templing field to-day than parts of North America.
