Crewer, m y nearest neighbor, an authority on gaiilening in this rigion, called me t ut th b lu.aning to the opening o f a trench in 'sthich lie plautnl worlhlcsH cabbages last fall. At Ih t tim e thetm a ll plants had Ui.t b gun to head, and seemed fifonly for stock feed or the comp lat-heaix Ncverthelcfs he set them in the Irerch, threw a little earth around them, piled on top a lot of old tomato vines, etc., then left them to their fate. Very S'oa the snow came ; there was a high bank over that trench all winter, and there this ex cellent culinary vegetable grew, headed and matured, for he found to-day a great heap of finer looking cabbages than w e see in m arket—they were real cabbage heads, w ith no rusty, sunburnid leaves. Last year our late cabbage was nearly a failure ; such scarcity o f th is general fa vorite has seldom been known here ; h ence this treasure-trove is opportune. I tested the quality in cold' law for din ner, and fou'd it exceedingly good-crisp, tender and w e ll flavored ; w e thought it a little betttr than ordinary cabbage. Noth ing can fail to be o f interest pertaining to the growth, habits or peculiarities of this vegetable, w h ich is said to be “ in almost daily use tliroughout the civilized world.” From a poor beginning it has reached its present state of perfection by slow degrees and careful selection. Prom an inferior Stock there has been developed a 'wonder- ful progeny,as cauliflower,bru3selssprouts savoy and red cabbage, w ith broccoli and its sorts, thus giving us a greater variety o f edibles from a single species than w e have obtained from any other plant, I be lieve. that -we h a v e found good and desira- ble for food. - J. A subscriber asks whether the new cur rant, Crandall, is the same as F a y ’s Pro lific. They are different. Fay’s Prolific belongs to the European species, Bibes rub- rum, and -was raised from seed o f the com mon red currant seven years ago by the late Lincoln Fay, of Chautauqua Co., N, Y. It is o f good flavor, bright red in color, with long bunches and large berries —a valuable ne’w currant. The Crandall was raised by R . W . Cran dall, o f N ew ton county, Kansas, from seed o f an American species, B. durem, and considering the large size and the ex cellency o f the fruit it is thought to be a hybrid with the cherry currant, some bushes of w h ich were growing n one from which the seed was taken. The fruit is black in color, and it is said to be e.xcellent in pies, jam or jelly. The leaves of the Crandall are different from those of the common currant, in conse quence of w h ich it is reported that the currant -worm, -which is so destructive to the common currant and th e gooseberry, does not attack it. Its productiveness and early bearing are also vouched for, so that it BeenoB to be a promising variety and w e ll worthy o f trial .—National Stockman. CARE OF THE GENERAL FLOCK, While thus giving the ewes and lambs special attention, the rest of tbe flock Should not be neglected. They should have good and uniform pasture during the grazing season, and if this becomes short at any time, it should be supplemented with other feed, in order that the wool m a y b e k e p t grow ing uniform ly through out the fleece, and the animal kept in the best thrift. Summer and winter they should at all tim es be able to obtain pure water, i t being a m istaken notion that sheep can do without water. Winter feed should be hay, crushed oats, some com (unless i t is wanted to fatten them, when more m a y be given), and p lenty, o f roots. Proper feed troughs nnd racks should be provided for them and these at all times kept scrupulously clean, as sheep are very fastidious in this respect. Many claim it sufficient to feed them but tw ice a day, but the better course is' to keep feed o f som e kind, hay or fodder, before them all the tim e for best thrift ; they also should be salted regularly. W h ile no costly barn is necessary to shelter them , they should have sufficient to protect them from snow, sleet and the cutting w inds of winter. A t the same tim e they should not be housed BO closely as to exclude proper v e n tilation and their shelter should be in connection w ith a yard in which they m ay exercise during suitable weather. I f the drove is very large, it ought to be divided into bunches of not more than fifty each, and each flock housed separately, lambs and pregnant ew es being of course to them selves as much as possible. Keep the pent clean, as disease often results from th< ammonia e xhaling from foul inclosures. W h ile all this care and nicety o f detail m ay and w ill be thought useless by many, sheep for the m ost part being b ed any way and any how, and cared for on the same general principles, it w ill b e f that w ith these as all other animal pays to take more trouble w ith them. Sheep are cleanly, docile, easily cared for and kept in place, and i f any diligence in care and breeding is had, w ill pay better and yield more pleasure than rearing any other d om estic a n im a l.—A g ricola in West ern Agrieulturist.
