By tbe lime this gets before our readers eome who are in a hurry may have already done the work. After many years of experience doing the work at all times from February, when the frost was out of the ground, until the vines have made shoots a foot long, v?ith varied success, I have come to the conclusion that the best time is 'when the vines are started to grow, the grafts being kept in a cool shady place so that they were a little behind the stock in start ing. To keep them entirely dormant in an ice house, as some recommend, is wrong. I have had the bads on the grafts swollen ready to buret when inserted that started to grow a week after. Clear the ground away from the root three or four inches deep, saw off at a smooth place at the bottom. If no fmooth place can be found, saw into the stump instead of splitting .os usu d. A thick, wide get saw I prefer to the knife, even in a straight stump. Shave your graft to fit the cut with a 8hua’der,t ieif the stock is less than an inch in diameter, then fill in the earth carefully, press firmly, b it do not move graft. Hill up to the upper bud, stick a peg one inch from each graft on one side, always on the same,so you can tell exactly where the graft is. Then cover the eye over with a handful of sawdust; throw a little mulch on and leave it until thegrafis begin to grow. I use two-eyed grafts, unless the wood is long jointed and thick, when one eye will answer. When the grafts begin to grow the suckers must bo kept off, or they will keep the grafts from grmving. There is no secret about mu‘?hroom cul ture, as the folio wing record of my bed will show. After tlie horse droppings had b een collected from the stables for several days, thrown jin a heap, and fre quently turned to rid the mass of the fierce heat, it was made into a bed beneath one of the benches in ajllttle cool greenhouse. The depth of manure, after being firmly pressed with the fork, wasjubout eighteen inches. It was formediDecember l.l, and on the following January 4 the spawn was intraluced in large Jumps, and a slight covering of one inch of 3 soil was placed it. The tempera* nre of.the bed was then 100 degrees (which is rather high), and nothing further was done, excepting an occasional sprinkling when very dry. March 8, the mushrooms were coming through the soil, and alljover the surface might be seen the tiny white specks and m icdium that would develop into edible plants later on. The temperature of the house was preserved at about sixty degrees all winter, and the heat of the bed March marked seventy eight dearees, A mod- •ately mild dark cellar will grow mush- )oms without any difficulty, and it seems strange that more* attention is not given this crop. In addition to the luxury any one may enjoy is the fact that it pays to raise them.-Cropuie iniV. T. Tribune. W E S T E R N HUM O R . It may not be out o f place to say a word on the subject, as I have had the hiring and working of a great many hands, good farm haml is very independent, estimate that he can save three fourths of his earnings, and should be able, say at the age of 24, to commence to rent a farm with his team, machinery, etc,, all paid for- or it may be that ho is in a position to make a payment on an eighty acre or a quarter section, and commence at once as a land owner. Then there is a stimulus to improve, beep in order, plant trees, preserve what exists, employ the odd moments profitably, and “ fix up” gen eral y, as we are accustomed to say in the west, These are impulses which seldom occ’ar to the ordinary tenant; and I am disposed to think that the longer one con- tinues to be a renter of land, the further he b ecomes rem oved from the spirit of improvement, and independence. This, however, is not by any means the history of farm Hands in general. “ If not so frequent, does it not seem strange, ’tis so infrequent, this is stranger still,” and why ? Jit is not because they do not receive good wages. One cause is that farm hands have not been educated to habits o f economy, but the radical cause I consider lies in the farm] hand himself. He becomes self-conceited, or what they are pleased to term independent, and for some trifling excuse] throws up his situa tion. All this arises from a lack of early discipline and good training on the part of the parents. I have again: and again been shocked and surprised]to see boys varying in age from 6 to 16 years, who to all ap pearance do not know what respect and obedience mean, and who never seem to acknowledge the authority of their par ents. This is very like a digression, but I had a great desire to mention the matter. I am certain that many of the boys and girls o f the present day, who are turned out upon the world with an imperfect Y training, never will ly otherwif 1 Ptaiiie an im p t attain to the po- kerw ise w o u ld, o r becom e live citizens.—J.B, Warren RAISING HORSE-RADISH FOR MARKET. The New York Herald recently com piled some information upon the culture of this plant. It says that the consump tion of horse radish has been largely in creased within a few years past. Former ly it was eaten mainly with roast beef, but now it accompanies oysters almost UQiver-'ally. Hundreds of tons are an nually sold. Horse radish requires a deep, mellow, rich soil, so that the roots may be grown in one year large enough for sale, and the land then plowed out so as to clean out the myriads of small sprouts that would coyer the soil with the plants the succeed ing year. A heavy dressing of fine ma nure should be plowed under ju the spring, or coarse manure in the fail, and replowed deep just before planting.making the land deep and mellow. Then throw up into ridges three feet apart and plant the sets or pieces of root one foot apart along these ridges. Plant last of April to middle of May, and sow radishes, beets, lettuce, etc,, between. The additional crop will be no hindrance. The yield o f good land is four to six tons per acre, though often less than half that much. It can’t be grown well on poor or stony land, and there is no use in trying it. But it is profitable where there is a market for it, It is about as hard to kill out as Canada Thistle or Couch Gras It is a good deal of work to prepare t] ) 0 ts for sale. They must be trimmed with a knife, the large roots ast the small, and then carefully washed ■ubbing' ’ ’ ' attrac'vive. Henry T.
