A rdove in the right direction is cccur- ing in m tay of the inland cities and villa ges which c.in be extended throughout the country w ith advantage to all concerned, particularly in grain-growing regions. The cetablishaieiit of village creameries is referred to. In grain fectioas dairying IS a secondary matter, and the butter pro duced is generally of an inferior quality. Outside of dairy districts it has been an i.mpostibility fur fam ilies to pri.cure a first class supply of butter. Farmers have not proper conveniences forbutter-makiog The m ilk is u iu illy set in shallow pans in the cellar, w ith decaying veget.ibles and othix refuse matter, or in tiie pantry, ad joining the kiichen, •where it receives the duet of floors when cv/ceping and odors from the cookstove, particularly on 'wash days. The skim m ing and churning are done at no regular intervals, but only when most convenient. N o wonder a poor product reeults. The surplus above the requiremer.te o f the fam ily finds its way to the grocery where the farmer dees his trading. The butter-table in the grocer’s cellar, when c .ntaining perhaps a dozen different lots of butter, resents a mottled appearance, representing as many differ ent shades of c dor as J-iseph’s c^at and of qualities that are passably good, ind'ffer- eat, bad, very bad and horribly bid. A transient customer cannot buy a pov nd of gilt-edge butter of a grocer, for the reason that the little offered is engaged in ad vance by those who w ill have no other. Y', THE PUG AND ITS ORIGIN. T h is nice little animal, w h ich baa of late years become quite a favorite and a fashionable dog among tbe ladies, is and has been always a great subject of con troversy, and up to the present time no ono has been able to prove plainly wbat were th e ancestors of this queer little pet. Our opinion w that at the beginning of this century the breeding of pug dogs was very much neglected, and, in fact, some twenty-live or ihiriy years ago the breed was considered by many authorities as nearly extinct ; this probably “was the cause ol the origin of the pug being for gotten, and when some fanciers of this breed, by hunting up some of the old pure types and by careful selec'ion, started it up again they w ere unable to trace it back to its true origin. W e know, however, from good source, tia t the projirietor of The K n ave of Clubs Tavern, Club Row, Church Street, Shore ditch, London, England, where dog men used to m eet daily about that time, had some pugs which probab'y were of the old type, and the only ones known in England at that date. The two prevalent opinions, however, are that the pug dog is a modified bull dog, or is a dwarf tff shoot of the Mastiff, which dog he tesem bles greatly by his head and color o f coat. Those -who c laim that at least one o f the ancestors o f the pug dog was the bull dog, base their opinion on the fact that the old pugs used to be larger than the present ones ; they are frequently undershot and out at elbows, some show plainly their lower front teeth, and are much larger in chest than behind, some are rose-eared, others black-chested, some have white marks on chest, and w h ite legs and feet, and many have deep stops all which are owing to the bull dog cross, no doubt, as also the w a y they hold on to each other when fighting. Those who claim that the pug is the descendant o f tbe M astiff, think that a great deal o f importance is to be attached to the question of color ; all breeders know that it requires a great many years to breed any race of animals true to a cer tain color, and at the same tim e have the power to transmit race characteristics to heir progeny ; only the oldest and care fully bred breeds of dogs breed true to color, and therefore the pug should be considered a much older breed than the bull dog. The color o f the M astiff and of the pug is the same ; they are much alike in habits and very sim ilar in physical formation ; both breeds are indolent in disposition and form warm attachments for their masters, yet they are not up t y the average in in telligence. For the above reasons they consider the pug a dwarf offshoot o f the Mastiff, and m at probably a freak o f nature has been perpetuated under favorable conditions, and this has formed a distinct species. W e do not consider ourselves capable of deeidieg which theory is the right one, but -w e are inclined to think that the bull dog had certainly a great deal to do with the origin of the pug dog o f to-day, and n although not often, bull dogs are found of jl the same color as that of the pug.—L D e <j F ., in Poultry Bulleiin.
