The following paper was read by Mr. A. J. Cay wood, the noted pomologist o f Ulster counly,at Poughkeepsie on Mar.Dlh. Thera has been a misapprehension out side of fruit sections, in regard to how easy money is made by growing fiu it for market. I know of no other business that requires attention, labor and a knowledge of how to proceed, more than fruit grow ing does. Carelessness and the neglect of culture and fertilizing, are in all cases fatal. The hun«lreds of bushels of fruit that are taken from an acre o f ground an nually, can n o t be continued without an annual return, and still more important is a frequent cultivation. He who beliyes Otherwise must expect to obtain something from nothing, and h ere I m ight show the constituents that fruits and vegetables draw fi-om the soil, but this can not be done in these short papers ; i t must be good soil that naturally contains proper constituents on which to begin, this round of draught and application, and if i t does, the first crop will take it out, and the experienced fruit grower will return a portion of the value o f h is crop to the soil each year, knowing h e cannot produce a paying crop \frithont it. A farm er having twenty-five acres of fruit can employ two horses, four men and some hoy help to advantage, constantly cultivating, between early spring a n d the first o f October, as it pays to k ill weeds When they first appear. W hen they get six inches h igh it is dillioult to subdue them. The constant cultivaiion of the soil bids defiance to drought, which is be coming more and more a scourge in this climate. Particles of soil in contact pass off the h eat and moisture rapidly, while on the contraiy cavities in the soil made by stirring, retain it much longer. Many tbink that in a dry time when weeds can not grow, and when not any can be seen, it is unnecessary to work the soil, hut this Sold Everyw h ere. _ Office. 4 4 Murray St.. N. Y . Planting the fruit, setting stakes and posts are done a t different times from spring to winter, and during this same time after the beginner has some fruit leady for market, he must take it every afternoon or evening, and it is generally done in the evening from the first o f June to the last o f Oc tober and we seldom see a mOre tired set o f men than fruit growers in the fruit season. Those living eight or ten miles back get home about midnight. A great hindrance to the success of the tillers o f the soil, is by companies mono polizing the approaches to the natural thoroughfares o f trade. This can be traced from Buffalo 1o New York. They virtu ally say to a farm er when he approaches with his load of produce, ‘ you must send this by the line I am engaged in business with or you cannot unload here This is paiticularly the case on the Hudson river, a thoroughfare as much belonging to the people as any highway in the country. At every wharf is a locked gate to this great highway and all who do not comply with their requisitions cannot leave their p ro duce on the dock, because of excessive charges. They kno w they can disregard our expostulations in regard to extortion and rough handling, as they know they have shut us off from putting on other boats, that would carry our produce more ^ refu lly , anel on more reasonable terms, and we also know that we are compelled to allow them to do w ith us as they think best, and unless our l^ islato r s break up the monopolizing of-the wliarfs o f the Hud son, this discrimmination against the peo ple must become more and more calami tous. 1 think Mr. .Putnans remarks on this point at o u r last meeting were appro priate—cautioning the tillers of the soil to not elect political demagogues bo go to Albany and trade away the fim n ers’in terests with these same monopolies. The way we farmers are w asting our fracohise and influence on lawyers and politicians, who do not know or care for our necessities, is a shame that should be proclaimed in our ears, until oroitsEd to a sense o f selfprotectiou. These men show themselves once a y e a r travel ling over their districts, leaving money with noisy town politicians to be used in election, and w ith much anxiety and care t.xhibited on their countenance urge in dividuals to stand by the old party, or the griiat measures now before the countiy will be lost, and these great measures are sure to alv/ays occur. I know a certain candidate in a mountainous district, who drives as far as h e can, on his important business, then ties b is horse to a tree and tabes it on foot over rocks and ewail.s till he sees and lectures everything that looks li ke a man, and such a j our n ey you could not hire him to make for any other purpose for one hundred dollars. From the momen^^ when the first shock was felt at Lisbon to tho period when all was over, and nearly 30,000. people were killed, not more than four minutes elapsed. A few seconds wd learn from “ Our Fufth and Its Story,” ^ usually a more frequent time for the shock ^ or shocks to last. Yet, while Caracas in Venezuela was almost desttoj'ed, and 12,-! 000 of its inhabitants killed by the earth quake of 1812, within the limits of half a minute, there are cases iu which constantly recurring shocks last for weeks, months and even years, as if the laboring earth was still trying to relieve itself of some of its super abundant energy. For example, the Cala brian earthquake^ of February, 1783, was not quite finished before December, 1786, id it is a common observation that the preliminary shock is usually followed by one of greater severity, and this in its turn 'oy^others less intense, like the distant claprf of thunder which herald the passing storm. But in this brief span the most frightful havoc can be wrought, and the wave of destruction propagated, from the most dis tant regions. The rumbling earth sound travels, for instance, at the rate of 10,- OOO or 11,000 feet per second, and the earth wave, on an average, about 1,200 feet in the same space ofltiitie,-5thougb -in '-Cffictrleston, as we have seen, a much higher rate wasat» iun^d.— Toronto 2'nrtS. ^ ^The Greatest Blood Purifieri A W e s t e r u l^ e a c l i M ' * A gentleman was conversing with jiB Idaho minister whom he happened to meet on a railroad train. “ You have been preaching in the Wes? for several years I understood you to say f* be inquired. “ Yes, for the last twenty years,” replied the minister. “ You know,” continued the Eastern man, “ hoW we sometime.^ read o f ministers in your country frequently having to go Jnto the pulpit With a revolver to use in maintaining order in a turbulent congrega tion, Is there anything in it ?” “ 0,yes, I have known ministers to do it, but I consider it entirely unnecessary.” “ That was always my idea, too.” <‘ 0 , y®s; yes, moat unnecessary,” re turned the preacher. “ Besides, it always seemed to me in very poor taste for a min ister of the Gospel, preaching peace on earth and good will toward men, to go Around tied to a hjp. cannon. It is found practicable, at last, to matot the waste of pine saw mills available for paper pulp. In reducing the wood to pulp bisulphate of lime has been used, this pow erful chemical acting on the fiber only when heated; heretofore only lead lined boilers would resist its action, these, however, be ing costly and hard to keep in repair. Mora recently there has been discovered in Ger many a k ind of brick lining for boilers, which serves tho purpose in question. The wood, sawed in small pieces, is digested >/ith bisulpbate in large boilers lined with this brick, heat being supplied through lead steam pipes, nothing further being necessary except thorough washing of the fibre. The bisulphate is made on the spot, by passing sulphurous vapor through por. 0 U 8 limestone kept thoroughly wet, •Their gentle action and good effec tho system really make them a pei little pill.
