THE PORT JER VIS D AILY TJmon, W E D NESD AY EVENING^ MARCH 21, 1888. THE VALENTINE PRIZES. GOOD HOME QARDENS-A CHANCE FOR THE YOUNG FARMERS-THE PRIZES. (_From>hc Oraniie Counti/ Fai-mer.) ' A good Home Garden is one of the most valuable adjuncts of the farm, though but a small proportion of the owners of farms can justly claim to have such a garden on their places. To rem edy this, the rising generation should be encouraged to take an interest in this subject. “ Just as the twig is bent, the tree’s inclined” has been wisely said and the P a k m k k wants to see the proper bent accomplished. In loooking about to see how this could be best accomplished, we concluded that a series of prizes for the best garden cul tivated on any farm by the sons or daugh ters, or both, would best begin an interest in this work and this we decided to do. At this juncture, we were most agreeably surprised by receiving the following note from Mr. Lawson Valentine, owner of Houghton Farm : Enrrou O karqh C ounty F armer .— I desire to contribute something to advance the condition of farmers’ homes in Orange county. To that end, I enclose my check for $100, which you will use as you may think best calculated to promote that pur pose. I amYours Respy., L awson V alentine . Mr. Valentine’s liberality, a liberality that does not wait for prompting, will be greatly appreciated and the results will, we hope, be amply satisfactory both to that gentleman and to the P a r m e r , which he has chosen as the means to accomplish his end. In accordance with the above, the F a r m e r offers the following prizes under the appended conditions, to he awarded by a disinterested committee at the next Orange County fair, which will be held in Goshen. Exhibit of the following vegetables, in season at the time of the fair, grown on the farm ; the work of growing them, except plowing and harrowing the land, must aU he done by members of the fanner's family, under the age of 31. For the best exhibit $30. For the second best exhibit $35. For the third best exhibit $20. For the fourth best exhibit $15. MONN.U r TTK-W--. Bainum said “ The American people like to be humbugged.” This may be true in the line of entertainment, but not where life is at stake. A man with con sumption or any fingering disease, look ing death in the face ami seeking to evade his awful grasp, does not like to he trifled with. So with confidence we place before our readers Nature’s great remedy. Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery, a sure relief for the long train of diseases result ing from impure blood, such as Oonsump- tion, Cronic Nasal Catarrh, Liver Com plaint, Kidney Disorder, Dyspepsia, Sick Headache, Scrofula and General Debility. It had no full moon. January had two full moons and so had March, but February had none.
