Elmira Daily Bazoo The OFFICIAL ORGAN of the Workingmen of Elmira and Chemung County, PUBLISHED EVERY NOON BY E. C. GEORGE & CO., 136 EAST WATER ST. i' -.UMS:—Single Copy, One Cent. Single Copy one month delivered by carrier, or by mail, 25 Cents. Saturday, Sept. 22, 1877. GREENBACK LABOR REFORM NOMINEES STATE, For Secretary of State, FRANCIS E. SPINNER, of Herkimer. For Comptroller, THOMAS P.EDWARDS, of Chemung. For Treasurer, WILLIAM DOYLE, of Albany. Eor Attorney General, WARREN T.WORDEN, of Cayuga. For State Engineer—To be nominated by State Committee. The Gazette is in hot haste to condemn the nomination of Mr. Edwards, as Comptroller, as a \broad burlesque.\ We can only overlook this unjust remark on the ground of that parti- san spirit which runs so high, just at present, in the democratic party i n this city. The fact is that party are put to their wits ends and know not where to look for men to fill the offices on their ticket. This labor reform movement has assumed such proportions that both the old par- ties are led to seriously consider the situation. Who knew Mr. Lincoln when at Chicago he received a nomination for a national office? It is nothing against Mr. Edwards that the editor of the Gazette is not acquainted with him ; i n fact that is one thing in his favor. It has been one of the tricks of the old parties to belittle the \new movement\ and every one connect- ed therewith. But everything is said to be fair in love and war. By the way did the Gazette ever hear of Francis E. Spinner ? FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY. The Horseheads Frese Press (democratic organ) which is known to oppose Mr. S. S. Taylor's renamination for District Attorney, speaks, giving advice to the Democratic County Convention. It is about the way for an official organ of any party to talk. We give it : \For District Attorney we neither want a swindler, gambler, or bribe-taker. It is essen- tial that the office be filled by an honest man in order that the public interest may not suffer nor criminals go unpunished. It would be a burn- ing shame to the county to concede that there is not an attorney of moral worth and standing in it, on whom a convention could bestow its choice for this office. We have no candidates to indicate, nor have we any choice save to de- mand that whoever is nominated shall come up to the Jeffersonian requsition of honesty and ca- pability. The man who holds this position is the law officer of the people of the county, and he stands between their interests and the inter- ests of the criminals and bad men whom the people demand shall be punished. Should not the man holding a position so important, be something more than a mere pettifogger without legal ability and destitute of that moral stamina upon which alone the laws can depend for their execution ? It is for the delegates to the county convention to fix an estimate upon their own character i n the selection of the candidates they deem most fitting representatives of theii moral and political ideas. If they think a man destitute of morality and integrity and wanting in legal ability is the one to represent them as the law-ofiicer of the people of the county, they will no doubt place such a man in nomination. One of that character can, no donbt, be found, buisly working for his own nomination. Men of that class are always most ardent i n urging their claims upon party conventions.\ PENNSYLVANIA GREENBACKERS. ' The Greenback State convention of Pennsyl- vania, met at Williamsport, on the 20th inst., when a permanent organization was effected as follows ; President, F. W. Hughes, of Schuyl- kill county ; vice presidents, M. P. Morrison, Philadelphia. The report of the committee on resolutions were adoped. The following nom- inations were made : Supreme Judge—Benjamin S. Bentley, of Lycoming county. Auditor General—J. R. Emerson, of Beaver. State Treasurer—James L. Wright, of Phil- adelphia. Gen. Gregg is the \heathen chinee\ in pipe laying at the republican convention to-day. He is half for Fairman and the other half for himself. For the first time i n eight years those two have agreed politically. The old democracy are letting the Soper faction, or young democracy, have their own way i n nominations this fall. I'hat's sensible. Their ticket will get beaten certain.
