ELMIRA^ BAZOO. VOL. 1 ELMIRA, N. Y., SEPTEMBER 13,1877. NO. 64 The Grand Council, Royal Select Master Masons of the State , closed its annual assembly yesterday in New York city. The British ship Avalanche, from London for New Zealand, collided with th e British ship Forest, for New York, yesterday, off Port- land. Both vessels foundered, and ninety-six persons were drownad. The Forest had a crew numbering 21 . Captain Lockhart, th e chief mate and seven others were saved. The Avalanche had a crew of thirty-two, and fifty passengers. The third officer and two seamen only were saved. The Labor Reform party of Massachusetts met in Boston, yesterday, in convention. The morning was spent in discussing the advisability of allowing members to take part in the pro- ceedings who participated in the recent Green- back Convention, many delegates showing a disposition to amalgamate th e two parties. Re- cess. After the recess the convention appointed a committee to confer with the workingmen's convention on the first of October. A state central committee was appointed. Peter Cooper addressed the workingmen at the Jersey Steel Works in Trenton, Tuesday, advising them to vote fo r the best and wisest men, a s then th e workingmen would not have s o much cause for complaint. The Greenback party in New Jersey are in earnest, A most dangerous 1^50 treasury not e has been discovered in Chicago. At the democratic stat e convention to-morrow in Boston, a lette r of Charles Francis Adams to the chairman of the convention is organized. The lette r pays a handsome tribute to Gaston, fo r yielding the nomination las t year in favor of the writer, and cordially recommends his nom- ination by the convention. A caitle plague, thought to b e a species of Texas fever, has appeared around Cleveland, O . Texas cattl e this year are covered with poison- ;)us ticks of two varieties. Many cattle are lying daily.
