Single Copy one month delivered by carrier, or by mall, 25 Cents. Friday, Sept. 7, 1877. COURT ARBITAMENT. The coal miner s in th e vicinity o f Lasalle, Illinois, who struck o n July 27th, appeared in the United States Court last week an d filed a petition, so says th e National Labor Tribune, representing their grievances, which were , that, after having arranged with Receiver o f th e Northern Illinois Coal Company , to mov e coal for seventy-five cents per to n an d receive full work, they were give n but three days per week, and had greatly suffered in consequence ; that the scales wer e inaccurate, and that the powde r furnished is inferior, and that under the circum- stances they can only mak e twenty-five dollars ])er month. While b y th e agreement they should be given opportunity to work more days and make mor e money . They therefore ask the court to arbitrate upon and adjust their griev- ances. We shall loo k for the judgment o f th e court with great interest. It is about time that the'conduct o f the Receiver which l.s merel y one of a thousand instances o f similar ba d faith, should receive a check through legal process, r <bere is a good dea l o f law , both common an d statutory in this countr y that might be used to advantage b y wi'ongeil workingmen. With an untaxed army of bondholders in this country and Europe , who dictate our laws, brib e our law-maker s an d corrupt ou r legislative bodies, is it not tim e that the people wake d up ? The democratic party is just as odious as i t ever was, and its ascendancy is just as much t o dreaded an d fought against. J. E. Emerso n is his great speech in Alle- gheny defined a workingman as one o f that \class of society who labors with th e hands an d the head—whether to provid e for the daily sus- tenance o f an individual life, t o promot e some enterprise o f world-wide fame, to increase man's happiness, t o improve man's moral.s, the better to enjoy the principles o f life, liberty and the pursuit o f happiness.\ M.
