LAST NIGHTS DISPATCHES. On an appeal from the United States Supreme Court of the Southern District of New York, in a case relating to the bankruptcy of James K. Place & Co., wholesale grocers in New York, (lie Supreme Court of the United States yester- day rendered a decision of great importance in reference to transfers of property by husbands to wives. It is in substance that a man i n a prosperous businens who may purchase real es- tate out of profits and transfer said property to bis wife, may be helo, in the event of subse- cpient failure, to have withdrawn funds to which an assignee in bankruptcy may lay claim in be- half of creditors. While in Providence, R. I., Presicient ffayes slept under a bed quilt which was made in the year 1787, by a direct ancestor of Mr. William Ellery, who was the signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island. The quilt had never been used since it covered the form of President Washington, on the occasion of his last visit to Newport just after the Rev- olution. The owners refused to allow it to be used by President Jackson when he visted the -state. The (irand Jury of New York County have found an indictment against Oakey S. Baker, grandson of the late Commodore Vanderbilt, for grand larceny. The prisoner was arranged and plead not guilty; he was taken back to the tombs hand cuffed to another criminal. 't he Prohibitionists have issued an address to their party in New Vork, and have called a State Convention at Utica on the 15th of Au- gust to nominate a State ticket. The address claims that this ticket will jroll 100,000 votes this Fall. District attorney Raines, of Rochester, has commenced on behalf-of his mother and brother Thomas, two suits rgainst the city for 810,000 each. The suit arose from the recent runaway iry which both plaintiffs were injured. I t is al- leged that nothing serious would have resulted from the accident but for culpable municipal negligence. Wm. F. Iiigersoll has sued James Hayes, of New York, for 850,000, for \winning the af- fections of his wife.\ Two deaths were reported yesterday in New York, from gangrenous sore throat. I t is a very rare disease. The health department are investigating. An enormous lode of copper, lead, gold and silver, twenty feet wide, extending for miles, has recently been discovered in Wilson, N. H.
