January 29. lftfl Nearly Done for $1.3 Million Hooper Overpass EN DWELL — A Wirvey k under way of the Hooper Rd. area in preparation of construction plans for a $1.3 million railroad grade crossing overpass. Martin and Shumaker, Vestal engineers, arc conducting the sur vey for the State Department of Public Works. A crew of 10 has been working In the End well area since Oct. %. Survey map* and blueprints are being completed. Cost of the project is estimat ed at $1,235,000 Of the total $708.- 169 is for construction; $414,500 for property purchased tor rights of way and $113,331 tor contingen cies. It will affect 29 properties. Thejlans were prepared by the Broome County Highway Depart ment in charge of J. Bruce Orr, superintendent. The viaduct is designed to ex tend from Mary St south over the railroad and the highway to about 200 feet west of the intersection. It will terminate in a quarter cloverleaf which will circle east and intersect the highway near the present outlet of Hooper Road Entrances and exit* will he north of the highway and from the clov- Propoaed Plan for the Hooper Rd. Oost of the project will be divid ed between the State and Erie Railroad The railroad cannot be assessed for more than 15 per cent of the total. Among the major changes, ac cording to Mr Orr. will be clos ing exits of Georgia and Valley Sts north of the tracks and River Rd , south of the highway. Most costly properties to be tak en include the Endwell Tavern, the Arrow Electric store. Texaco gas station and the Atlantic gas station The last three are on the highway. To be affected by the viaduct will be the Beekwirh Lumber Com pany. The retail store will not be touched but access from Hooper Road will be cut off. Plans include a new street. It probably will be called Valley St.. Mr Orr said The present Valley St outlet on Hooper Rd will be a deadend It Is planned to have a circle around and intersect Hooper Rd. opposite Mary St. Mr Orr pointed out that the plan Is not a working sketch. \It is a study of how It can be done,\ hr said The viaduct win dear the rail road tracks by 22 feet and the George F. Highway or Route 17C by 11 teat The viaduct will be tf-feat wide. It will have a roadway of 31 feet and a six foot sidewalk oa each side.
