FRANK MATYAS By HareM Flinektr Bulletin Staff writer ' Patrolman Frank Matyas has i learned during his four and A\ half years on the Endlcott police force that a policeman has, got to be able to do anything. The \anything\ for Matyas has Included everything from help ing deliver a baby to chasing a speed demon at 100 miles an hour through the village streets. The baby delivery was made about two years ago when Ma tyas was called out with the po lice ambulance to race the stork to the hospital. The stork- won the race and Matyas, along with .patrolman Paul Rossi, helped usher a new life into the world. The 100 nule-an-hour -chase occurred a year ago. It started in Endlcott and continued up Watson Blvd. to Oakdale where the speedster was Anally caught The driver was charged with reckless driving and properly punished for his unlawful be havior. However, aside from these ex ceptional incidents, Matyas said police work has been rather routine. The normal day to day activity of a police man the tall lanky cop pointed out consists of handling traffic, running am bulance calls, quelling minor dis orders and pulling in drunks. \Being a policeman,\ Matyas said, \is not as exciting as you might think A lot of times nothing* much seems to happen. Then all of a sudden it seems everything happens at once.\ The patrolman Joined the force in May. 1953 about a year after he finished a three year stint\ in the Army as a military policeman. In the interim period he worked as a guard at the Modem Design plant During his Johnson City High School days Matyas was on the varsity baseball and basketball teams. H e is still an ardent sports lover and is a strong rooter for the New York Yan- kees. His more recent sports ac tivities have included managing the police Softball team and be ing president of the Endicott Municipal League. He has been married five years to Lucy Matyas. a teller in the Endicott Trust Co bank The couple have one daughter. Ann Marie. 4. ' He believes (children should be the averag* (for a family. Matyas likes being/a polios- man. • Its interesting work.\ ft* said. \ and I hops to continue with the force for a long time. It's Just the kind of work for a young fellow who wants to do something worthwhile \ The edible part of a scallop to the muscle that opens and dotes its shell.
