T h e two circumstances described above can leave no doubt in the m ind of a n y person that, in con sid e r in g the B e t h e l Site, th e T r u s tees of th e State U n i v e r s i t y m a d e a v e r y noticeable departure from th e ir usual th in ldn g . T h e question is : W H Y did th e y act so d iffe r ently? T h e m a tter o f selectin g a site fo r the S u lliv a n C o u n ty C o m m u n ity C o llege was b y no m e a n s an easy m a t t e r to resolve. F o r approxim a te ly three years the a v a ila b le sites w e re exam ined and discussed at length. A t tim e s the discussions w e re nothing less th a n nerve shat tering. F in a ll y , the S u p e r v iso r s ’ of the C o u n ty and the Tru s t e e s o f the C o llege sat dow n around a table, in a n E x e c u t iv e Session, and' every person present was afforded a n op p o r t u n ity to a ir his view s . T h e m e e ting w a s productive as fa r as S u lliv a n C o u n t y w a s concerned. A s h a d been hoped, this m e e ting re sulted in a concurrence of both B o a r d s , on one site. T h e site w h ich m e t the appro v a l of both the B o a r d of T r u s t e e s and the B o a rd of S u p e r v iso r s w a s th e B e t h e l Site. A p prop r iate resolutions w e re adopted b y both B o a r d s and forw a rded to the State U n iv e r s ity w ith the fe r v e n t h o p e th a t w e w o u ld soon be s t a r t i n g to b u ild ou r C o llege. T h e people of the C o u n t y w e re ju b ila n t over th is good new s and, w h e re th e ir fa ith had been sagging, it w a s renew e d . H o w e v e r, th e ir n e w ly strengthened fa ith was soon shat tered. O n Ju n e 14th, the Trustees of the State U n iv e r s ity disapproved the B e t h e l Site. W h y they disap proved has not yet been m a d e th o r o u g h ly cle a r to the people of S u lli va n County. T h e people o f the C o u n ty can h a r d ly be blam e d fo r th e ir ra t h e r heated reactio n to w h a t happened. T h e y can o n ly see it as a d e n ial of th e ir rig h t to choose the site fo r th e ir B y th e ir cry, \ B E T H E L O R N O T H I N G \ , they say to the State University: \We w a n t our C o lleg e in B e t h e l or w e w ill have no College.” T h is i s R I G H T and th o r o u g h ly justified. T h e people ce r t a in ly should have the rig h t to choose, and they should not h e - d e n ied th a t rig h t b y a gov ernm e n t b o d y w h ich has heard on ly one side o f th e story. T h e y should not be denied th a t rig h t — period. W e are now in form e d that an other jo in t m e e ting is soon to be called b y th e B o a r d qf Tru s t e e s and the B o a r d of Supervisors, to gether w ith ce r t a in h ig h officia ls of the State U n iv e r s ity . L e t us hope and p r a y that, in this m e e t ing, the S t a t e U n iv e r s ity can be persuaded to reve r s e the decision w h ich has caused the good people o f S u lliv a n C o u n t y tlie ir present torm e n t. . T h e r e are m a n y questions, in ad d itio n to the above, w h ich the good people of S u lliv a n C o u n t y are a s k in g these days. A n o t h e r ques tio n is : “ W h a t e v il person, or per sons, got to the T r u s t e e s o f th e State U n iv e r s ity ? ” A n d another: “ H o w could the T r u s t e e s o f the State U n iv e r s ity he sw a y e d in th e ir judgm e n t b y a h a n d f u l of unscrupulous p o liticia n s ? ” A n o t h e r question w h ich m u s t he resolved i s ; “W h y S u lliv a n C o u n t y has been treated in a d iffe r e n t m a n n e r than w a s U ls t e r C o u n t y w h e n the site selection circum s t a n c e s in both C o u n ties w e re so sim ila r ? ” T h e r e are ad d itio n a l questions, too nu m erous to m e n tion. A l l of these th in g s m u s t be explained satisfac to r il y before the people o f S u l li v a n C o u n ty can again contem p late a C o m m u n ity C o lleg e w ith h a p p i ness in th e ir hearts. T h e r e is a ra p id ly grow ing senti m e n t am o n g th e people, and am o n g th e ir d u ly elected representatives on the B o a r d o f S u p e r v iso r s , th a t th e C o llege s h a ll he b u ilt on the B e t h e l S ite or i t w ill n e v e r be b u ilt u n d e r a n y circum s tances. M a n y re spected, su b s t a n t ial citizens, and m a n y ■ p u b lic o f f icia ls, are openly ta k in g un the cry, “ B E T H E L O R N O T H I N G ” . M a n v people, and at le a s t one S u p e r v isor, h a v e advan ced th e h o r r ib le thought that the id e a of a C o m m u n ity C o llege fo r S u lliv a n C o u n ty should be aban doned altogether. A n o t h e r la r g e se g m e n t of th e p o p u latio n is ca llin g fo r a p u b lic re f e r e n d u m to d e t e r m in e w h e ther o r not a C o m m u n ity C o lle g e is w a n ted in the firs t place. T h e s e sentim e n ts have a ll been \brought about b y certain b a c k e rs of th e L o c h S h e ld r a k e S ite w h o w ill n o t a c c e p t defeat g r a c e fu lly, e v e n though th e Suprem e C o u r t of the S t a te of N e w Y o r k has to ld llie m , in no u n c e r t a in term s , th a t th e ir acts w e re illeg a l. N e x t , please consider th e Stone R id g e S ite o f the U ls t e r C o u n t y C o m m u n i t y C o llege.
