R a c e w a y a d m in istrators disclosed la s t w e e k th a t the R a c e w a y is in deed co n s id e r in g a m a m m o th s k i ju m p in g project. T h e y have a s s u r ances th a t seem in g com p e titive ju m p e r s w o u ld b e no problem . C r o w d s o f '35,000 to 40,000 attend th e ju m ps a t D e a r M o u n t a in, and the tra c k -officials feel that huge crow d s c a n h e attracted to M o n t i c e llo b y the sam e type of com p e ti tio n . T h e R a c e w a y o ffcia ls said it w o u ld h e p o s s ib le to build a scaf fo ld in g o r tow e r 184 feet h ig h in th e tra c k ’ s b a r n area, and the s k ie r s w o u ld re a c h th is b y elevator. T w o m inutes after the lig h t n in g was seen, M e l Soule and D ic k L o t t sm e lled sm o k e. T h e y looked in the attic w h ich was fu ll of smoke, but they saw no sign of fire. A fire alarm was turned in,' and D ic k w e n t to the firehouse for the truck. In the m e a n tim e fire was discovered in the office. L ig h t n in g had CUl’lod up a m e tal lig h t n in g fixture in the office, and there was some dam age to rafters, ce ilin g and attic. T h e firem e n responded to the c a ll im m e d iately, and soon had put the fire out. W h e n the insurance adjuster exam ined the prem ises, he rem a r k e d on the fa c t t h a t there, was p r a c t ic a lly no w a ter damage. T h e firem e n had used h ig h pressure fog to extinguish the blaze. T h e ir quick response to the c a ll and their care fu l work re s u lte d , in only m in o r dam age.
