He ran to the end to the corridor and fell dead. Eoff ran back to the corridor on the cast side of the cells, and McConnell, Parker and several deputy m arshals ran in and opened fire on Cherokee Bill whenever he tried to leave his cell. H is am m u n ition was nearly exhausted, and he agreed to surrender his pistol to H enry Starr, which ■was done. The pistol w ith which he did the deed was a new one. M o v e m e n t to P u r ify Sunday N e w s p a p e r s S tarted In B o s ton . B oston , Ju ly 37. —A n effort is to be made between the press and the p u lpit for the purification of Sunday reading and the enlightenm ent of readers of the Sun day press. With this end in view the Newspaper Sermon association, organized under the laws of this state, has been in corporated here. The articles of the association read that the corporation is constituted for the pur pose of dissem inating nonseotarian and nondoctrinal religious tru ths by the aid of Sunday n ewspapers; quickening among editors a n d publishers of Sunday papers a realization of their possibilities and re sponsibilities in the spiritual and moral development of their readers; lessening church antagonism and developing in the Christian church a greater willingness to use the newspapers as a power for Chris tianity. The following are the members of the association’s advisory board: Dr. George Hodges, dean Cambridge Theological school; Rev. E. A. Horton, Rev. Dr. Ed ward Everett Hale, Robert Treat Paine, Charles H. Taylor, John H. Holmes, Dr. George Hepworth, Rev. Jam e s B. Werner and W illiam E. Harmon. The latter was elected president of the association. EXPLORER A SWINDLER. ' Sw a in, W h o W a s W ith P e a r y , Charged W ith Issu in g B o g u s D r a fts. C hicago , Ju ly 27.—WaiTants were tak en out for the a rrest of Walter T. Swain on the charge of swindling. Swain was a member of the Peary expedition to the north pole, which left Philadelphia in June, 1893. Lieutenant Peary picked up the young m a n in Brooklyn and made him his private secretary. Swain was rescued w ith the rest of the party last year by an expedition of which Professor T. C. Cham berlin of the Chicago university was a member. H e turned up iu Chicago about two weeks ago, aud, it appears, devoted himself to a series of swindles of which members of the Peary expedition were the victims. His method was to ol)tain small sums on bogus drafts. The total of the alleged swindle.s is not large. Swain is said to l)o- long to a n eMcellcnt fiimily in Indianapo lis. » TOy Does a Feilow Get Yellow i You needn’t mail an answer to this simp,e conundrum. “We know that you know that a fellow—we use the term in no offensive sense—is yellow because he is bilious. In other words, bis liver has got out of order, bis bowels has become constipated. His skin and eyeballs assume (a most unwarrantable assump tion) a saffron tinge, his tongue puts on a coat of fur, even in the summer time; beneath his right shoulder blade and ribs Ivvinges remind him that a very restless imp is in their immediate vicinity. Now,if this hapless individual will simply procure and use at once Hostetler’s c^toraach Bitters he’ll be all right shortly. Constipation, biliousnet'S, malaria, indigestion, rheumatism, neu ralgia and disorder of the kidneys and bladder all yield to this peerless family remedy and preventive. Use it prompt ly, with persistence and regularity. A wineglassful thrice daily. A Spendthrift Goes Crazy. It is a well-known fact th a t there are thousands of men in all parts of the Uniti d States who, by systematic trading through Chicago bickers, make large amounts every year, rang ing from a few thousand dollars for the man who invests a hundred or two hurdred. dollars up to S50,000 to $100,000 or more by those who invest a few thousand. It is also a fact that those who make the largest profits from comparative small invest ments on this plan are persons who live away from Chicago and invest throngh brokers who' thoroughly understand systematic trading. Our plan does not risk the whole amount invested on any trade, h u t covers both sides, so that whether the market jises or falls it b.-ings a steady profit that piles up enormously in a snort time.
