ADRIANCE, - 3 3 8 MAIN S T R E E T — 0pp. Morgan House, The Tourist has received a letter from Mr. Thomas Haggart, formerly of this city. He is located at Boulder, Colo rado, where he expects to make his home for six months at least. He states that he has been suffering intense pain for a week past, through an attack of the “shingles,” and secured relief only by the use of morphine. His wife and little one are well, Mr. A. A, Reed, for merly of Reed & Reed, dry goods deal ers of this city, with his family are lo cated at Boulder, Mr. Heed is practis ing law very successfully. Last summer. Rev. R. E, Farrier. P. L. Van Wagenen and John Peterkin purchased a fine property near the shore at Nantucket, Mass. During August, these gentlemen with their families an ticipate enjoying that delightful retreat, A well known local druggist was talk ing with a customer the other day, about the alleged injurious results following the use ot soda water. He said that it was not true that soda water used in moderation was harmful. It is nothing more than plain water charged with car bonic acid gas. Appolinaris is water charged with gas,and it is considered one of the most healthful beverages in use. The real harm in drinking soda water comes from the indiscriminate use of phosphates and bromides. They are medicines and should not be used at all as beverages. Fifteen to twenty drops of phosphate is a dose and it should not be repeated more than three or four times a day. Yet every fountain is sup plied with a phosphate bottle and the boys in charge ladle the acid out as if it was a fruit syrup. This is the practice that is killing people—not the moderate drinking of soda water flavored with healthful syrups made from the pure juices of fruits. Fair reader, you ask the Tourist what makes men fall in love. Well, our ex perience and observation in this city, leads us to say that one man falls in love because he has nothing better to do, another because he has something better to do;*on 0 because a woman has flattered him, and another because she has not; one because the woman is fair, and an other because she is dark; one because he has never been in love before, and another because he has; one to save himself and another to save a woman; one for the sake of company, and an other for the sake of quiet; and most men because they don’t know why. The three free teeth pullers ,have left town and are now in Khinebeck. Land lord Bain of the Nelson house refused to have hia hostelry turned into a Rental establishment, so they cut their visit short. A new law regulating the prac tice of dentistry in this state goes into effect Aug. 1. It is strict in its require ments, and the dentist who registers under it will have to be well equipped for his work. It is said those who were practicing before 1879 are exempt from the operation of the new law, but those of less experience will have to prove their ability. Two well-known Newburgers were in town yesterday. They were Frank Bain, who presides so eflSciently over the affairs and destinies of the palatial Pala-- tine hotel, and B. C. Norton, the electric railroad projector. They came to take their first lesson in bicycle riding. George Becker of H. von der Linden’s establishment, was their teacher and that is sufficient guarantee that the gentlemen mastered the mysteries of the wheel before they returned to Newburg, jHOOD^S PlliliS cure Liver lUs, Biliousness^ Indigestion^ Headache. Lawn Concert at the Hospital. -^A charming entertainment was given on the lawn at the Hudson River State hospital last night for the entertainment of the patients. It was in the form of a concert by the choir of the Washington Street M. E. church, under direction of Prof. T. J. Macpherson, assisted by the orchestra of the hospital and Mrs. F. S. Wheaton, who is visiting the family of Superintendent Pilgrim,' in soprano solos. The lawn was illuminated with electric lights and Chinese lanterns and the scene was a decidedly pretty one, The next concert will be by the Pokeep- sie City band. Tnis is the Place to Tisit. A pleasant little outing was enjoyed by Mrs, Laban 9rmsbee’s class, No. 5, of St. Luke’s Sunday school, says the Mat- teawan Journal. The class went by cars to Pokeepsie, and spent the day most delightfully inspecting Vassar college and riding on the different trolley lines to various points, Sight seeing is hungry work, especially to young ladies, and when Smith’s dining parlors were reached a bountiful spread was soon disposed of. The day was finished by a visit to the Soldiers’ Memorial Fountain, and the event will long be remembered by the class as a “red letter one.” A three pound bass was among the lot caught by Charles Morschauser and W. H. Wood in the Walikill on Thurs day. Nothing Strange. Intelligent people, who realize the im portant part the blood holds in keeping the body in a normal condition, find nothing strange in the number of dis eases that Hood’s Sarsaparilla is able to cure. So many troubles result from im pure blood that the best way to treat them is through the blood, and it is far better to use only harmless vegetable compounds than to dose to excess with quinine, calomel and other drugs. By treating the blood, with Hood’s Sarsa parilla, scrofula, salt rheum and what are commonly called “humors;” dys pepsia, catarrh, rheumatism, neuralgia, consumption and other troubles that originate in impurities of the blood or impaired circulation, can all be cured. w lldl3 Needle cases free tonight at T himg ’ s .
