J., Jitly 13.—Ashury Park is still in the throes of the bicycle mania. With only few exceptions the races were fiercely contested, and the victors earned the spoils which the League ol American Wheelmen held out to them. Arthur Gardiner, the man from Chicago, whose work in all the preliminary trials has astonished the racing people, had hopes of winning the half mile national championship race and the two-thirds mile special race, but tried and experienced veterans were too much for him, and his EDDIE BALD. colors went down in both races before E. C. Bald. Bald’s victories were evidently popular ones, and he was cheered loudly as he returiied to the tape. In the h;:;i ijdle race the finish between Bald and Ih:y IvijicDouald. his team mate, was sn e.’cti\. nciy c 1( jsc that many thought MacDorialu !hr vi‘to\”. The tY.'(>-i Mird ndie on'm special created the most rumuiraous iij>roar among the cranks, ami c-eery bu-h r>i the ground was pluckily fought -iver. K. C. Bald of Buf falo was Just ilu* sh.'ulow the best of liis field, and Murphy, Ffarter, Sims, Ziegler, Gardiner, Coulter and MacDonald went down before him. There were a number of special features sandwiched in between the contests. Sid Black, a trick rider, performed incredible feats upon an ordinary safety; two little babies, 4 and 5 years old, rode a third of a mile race, and two quadruplets, the Syra cuse team and the Berio team, rode a mile against time. The former, ridden by Cal lahan, MacLead, Butler and Haggerty, won the race in 1:50 3-5, making a new record for the quad. The only Zimmerman also rode a mile against time, and set the crowd wild by making it in the remarkably fast time of 1:57 4-5. _______________ GOLD EXPORTS BEGIN. A New Y o rk F ir m Defies t h e B o n d Syndi- N ew Y ork , July 13. —Since the con tract between the Morgan-Belmont syndi cate and the government was signed last February not a dollar in gold from the treasury has been shipped to Europe. This morning, however, the first lot of Ameri can gold to leave the country since the second month of the year will start on its way to Europe. The amount — §350, 000—is sent merely for profit, and at the prevailing rates of exchange—about $4.90—^there is good profit in it. The bond syndicate has raised exchange rates to the highest point since the resumption of specie payments, and, according to the best informed men in \Yall street, the only thing which has pre vented the precious metal from leaving Oiur shores, when under normal conditions it would run out in a steady and.ever in creasing stream at the prevailing high rates, was the fear of Incurring the dis pleasure of the powerful syndicate. SHE COULDN’T SHOOT. So Miss HtJg-lies P u lled O u t H e r R ival’s Golden Tresses. N ew ark , N. J., July 13.—In a fit of jealousy Theresa Hughes, S3 years old, of Montclair, attempted to shoot Emma Spaeth, 18 years old, in Fullerton avenue. Miss Spaeth had received the attentions of a friend of Miss Hughes, and this is as signed as the cause of the act. As Miss Spaeth was passing Miss Hughes’ home the latter ran out, grabbed her rival by the hair and attempted to di-aw a re\’olver from her pocket. The weapon caught in her dress, and she was unable to free it. Meanwhile the screams of Miss Spaeth had attracted the attention of a negro, who sprang forward and separated the women. Miss Hughes held a tuft of Miss Spaeth’s tresses in her hand as she went back to her home. Miss Spaeth is pros trated and refuses to prosecute her assail- BASEBALL. NATIONAL LEAGUE GAMES.
