November 11, 1964 BELLMORE LIFE Page 7 Collector of Old Bellmore Memorabilia Collections have been started in many curious ways, but for Mrs. Marie Quick, owner of Quick's Photo Shop on Bellmore Avenue, in Bellmore, an off-hand remark by her d a ugh ter began a collection that has mushroomed almost out of bounds. Les s than four months ago, a resident brought an old photo- graph of Bellmore to Quick's to see if it could be copied, Twenty- year old Trudie Qu1ck noted the picrure with interest, and wondered casually, \if there might be more pictures like this floating around town.'' \Why don't we find out?\ her mother said, and in le ss time tban it takes to say \watch the birdie\ tbe Quicks were snowed under by photographs, Go od Memories \Apparently Bellmore resi- dents have not only kept all of tbeir old pictures ,\ she says with some astonishment , \tbey also have amazing memories of exactly who was in each picture I\ Consequently, the Quicks have not had to do much research on pi ctures brought in. They have received everything from three -f oot-wide oak - framed mementoes to wallet- sized brown-edged snapshots . Of course we copy them and give the originals right back to the owners. But we never dreamed the project wou ld evolve into a collection at all . At the begin- ning, we were interested because we have been in town only fifteen years, and, although we've seen plenty of changes ourselves , we wer e cur i ous about the hi story of tbe community and how it's grown.' ''A few years ago, we came across a very old camera, vintage about 1 900 , and just for fun, placed ilin our window askmg anyone with a camera that old to bring it in, and we would ex- change it for a brand new camera kit, After les s than a week, we ha d to stop the offer - we had already given away six kits to people in the community who' just happened to have an old camera around rhe house', and more were coming inl\ The Quick's collection has sparked other collections as well. One 12-year old purchased a whole ser ie s of prints of Old Bellmore for a school p r oject , and a young woman whose parents are o ld-tim e residents requested some prints for them. Mrs. Quick has very kindly al - lowed this first issue of \Bell- more Life\ ro reprint a few of the pictures in her collection, so that present-day Bellmoriues, youngsters growing up in the community as well as adults, may ge t an idea of what their town was lik e B .
