All too often, perhaps, the service of our schools is me~ sured in terms of dollars - the college graduate will earn so many thousands of dollars more than the high school graduate who will, in turn, earn so much more than the grade school graduate. As a matter of statistics, these statements are undeniably cor- rect; but we would like to think that our work wi th youngsters produces values that cannot be measured with a dollar ::;ign, To educators, every week 1s American Education Week. We like to show what we have to offer; but al the same time, we appreciate the opportunity to point out that what the child assimilates in school depends 1n large measure on the attit- udes he brings with him. It ls in this area that parents can help most. Parental support is needed at budget time and at school ex- pansion time but parents' great- est contribution is 1n the recog- nition of one simple fact - ed- ucation of children is not just the 3R's - it is the learning and the practice of moral and spiritual values and the devel- opment of civic responsibility, This part of the educational. process can never be delegated to the school or church or tem- ple - it must be shared by all if success is to be achieved. Education is a joint enterprise. We, in the schools, will make every attempt to help you in your part or the task just as you have supported us so loyally in our endeavors • H.S. Board Asks: Curb Vandalism A strong appeal to parents and taxpayers to help curb increas- ing vandalism in and around the schoo l s was made by John Mar - tin at la st week~ meeting of the central High School District 3 Board of Education. Mr, Mar- tin described how fences had been broken down or removed with clippers, and schools had been broken into. He said that the parents must get the mes- sage that this would have to stop . Eugene Adam reported on con- versations he has had with rep- re~entatives of security compan- ies. These will check on school grounds, and also enter the build- ings for inspection, it desired. Another method is installation of burglar alarms on the basis of microwaves. It was mention- ed that in North Bellmore mem- bet·s of the Civil Defense have undertaken to patrol the school grounds as a community pro- ject. No decision was made at the Board meeling, but UH :! Buildings and Grounds Commit- tee was asked to look into the matter for further protection.
