(Photo by BERTOLINI) Large Turnout For Broo kside Dedication by F a i th Lau rs e n A large and enthusiastic crowd turned out Sun - day afternoon for the d edication of the new Brook - side Junior High School, which will serve portions )f both North Merrick and North Bellmore . 0D hand tO assist With the cornerstone laying was Katherine E. Reif, President of the Bo a rd of Education of Central High School District 3, and other member s of the Board and of the Student Council, There was s tanding room only in the 765 seat modern-design auditorium when the dedication ceremony began. The Brookside junior High School Band , l ed by Donald E. Howard, J r., played several numbers very well, especially \Rhythm of the Winds\ composed by Frank Eriksen, 25 Kensington Ave., Merrick. Lorraine Kaufman, vice - president of the Student Council , led the pledge of allegiance to the flag, and james Costanzo , President of the Student Council, accepted the key to the building on behalf of the students after it had passed from the architect , Norman Wiedersum, to Edward Lehman of North Bellmore, past - president of the Board, and to William H , Engelhart, Principal. Wel come was extended by Dr. Juliu s C, Braun, Principal of the Distri ct, and Harry W. Gross, Superintendent of the Sole Super- visory District. Invocation was by The Re v. john B. Hull of Sacred Heart R, C , Church; dedicatory prayer was by Rabbi Sanford E. Saperstein; and Benediction by the Rev. Ronald S. Law of the Merri ck Methodist Church. Eugene E. Adam of Bellmore , vice-president of the Board, ex- tended an invitation to visit the building. Refreshments were served in the cafeteria, Gifts to the new building include a fla g from Congress man Frank Beck - er, and one from the Merrick Kiwani s C lub, and a tree planted by the C,H , S . District 3Teachers Assocation. Appreciation was expressed to the newly formed Brookside P.T .A. and its president , Mrs. Alex Moser, for assistance with the program. Problems Ahead Mr . Gross referred to some \ very serious problems \ which face education leaders in the near future such as that of adminis - tering \ shared services\ among the schools , the suggested establishment of a central pur - chasing agency for the schools in the county , and the standardiza- tion of school buildings. Principal Engelhart said the new building , because of irs func- tional beauty, will be a challenge to the educators to \grow pro - fessionally.\ james Cos tan zo said rhat the students are proud of their beau- tiful school , and will accept the responsibilities it impli cit ly im- pose s to mea sure up to excel- lence . Desp i te In j ury Miss Reif, who carried on her part in the pr ogra m de s pite a ser iou s injury to her hand suf - fered Saturday evening, praised the \64 people who worked for a good many weeks to bring about the vote for this schoo l \. She called for the pur su it of \good- nes s , tr1.ah, and beauty \ on the part of the students , and the ex- ercise of wisdom, understanding and zea l on the pan of the teachers.
