... Page2 Our Streets To Sport Bright · Holiday Lights Christmas decorations in Bellmore will have a new look this year. Instead olthe stringing of lights across the street as in past years , Bellmore will have a number of four-foot Christmas trees on 8- foot poles. The individual mer- chants interested in the appear- ance of the community w1ll pay for the cost of the installation. The new arrangement means an initial investment for the bus- inessmen, but then they wlll be able to use the units fot· several years and only pay tor the new trees each year. In some cases two stores can share the cost by putting the new installation between them. The Bellmore Chamber of Commerce is making the arrangements. BELLMORE LIFE Improving Water Flow The water supply in the Bell- mores should be greatly 1m- proved by the installation of new and larger mains, following an order by the Public Service Com- mission . The Utilities and In- dustries, Inc., the private firm which supplies the water in this area, was under order from the Com mission to make severallru- provements. The firm sought an extension until April on the grounds that no water shortage is likely until then. However, the Commission insisted that the work must be completed by No- vember 1. After Nov. 1 the water company announced that 1t has completed all required work with the ex- ception ot a section that must be coordinated with the Wantagh- Oyster Bay Expressway con- struction. The water company's an- nouncement was welcomed by residents, although 1t will not be known unW next summer whether the completed install- ation will be sufficient tosecure adequate water pressure. The last time we had a story like this wasinl664. That was the year they put a balance wheel into a watch. Watches ticke<llllong like this for 300 years. Until one morning, in the Bulova lab, the ticking stopped and Accutron .. was born. (To make the Accutron movement, Bulova took th e balan ce wheel out and put a tuning fork i n. Thi s 11111in g fork splits e1 ·e ry second into 3 60 equal parts. The result is a faint hum-an d th e most precise tim e in history.) Until Accutron, most people were perfectly satisfied with a watch that lo st 2 minutes a day, every day of their lives . When Bulova brought out a timepiece guarantccdtnot to lose that much in 2 months} these people weren't sa ti sfied anymore. They started coming to our store to buy Accutron. They're still doing it. And the story isn't over when they've bought it. An Accutroq owner wlll tnake it a point to s t op by and tell us our chronometer is 6 sec onds slow. Honest. He will ignore the nooq whistle becau se the noon whistle is 6 seconds fast. (We saw that happ en .) He will correct his best friend's watch. right to hi s best friend's watch's face. In other words, when we sell a man Accutron we turn him into a bit of a nut. He just can't Citop talking about it. Come in. Let us show you the newest Accutron timepieces by 1~~~ Bulova. ' Wednesday, November 11, 1964 Albany-Bound! Ben more Resident To Represent People Of Fifth Assembly District by Dorcas Carlos From behind a desk scattered with briefs, papers, books, and folders, the new New York State Assemblyman representing the Fifth As- sembly District talked about politics and problems and progress the ether day. Herbert Sachs Is a Bell- morelte-- the first to go to Albany from th1s community, His home is in North Bellmore-- and his law oUice Is at 2262 Center Avenue , Bellmore. The area he will represent in Albany is the Fifth Assembly District-- a tar reaching territory that tak~:>s in a good deal of North Bellmore as well as the village of Hemp- stead, East Meadow, Levittown, North Baldwin, North Merrick, North Seaford, North Wantagh, Roosevelt, and Uniondale. Although this was hls first try at running for otflce him- self, Herbert Sachs considers himsell no newcomer to poli- tics. He has been Democratic Zone Leader of North Bellmore since 1958, and before that was president ol the Democratic Club and served as committeeman. A Democrat, he believes that no party is all right or all wrong, and says he reserves the right to disagree with his own party when he thinks their stand is not best for the people in his o wn district. Herb Sachs met those people during the campaign he has just finished-- several thousand of them. He received the design- ation of the Democrats to run for the Assembly on February 12 and he figures he campaigned from that day right up unW mid- h..lght , Monday, November 2. Mltt-Tht-Petple Ctm,tip II erbert Sachs tor sc h ool distriCt s here, and he puts this important subject at the top of his li s t !or action . Unemployment A Problem Unemployment in the area be- cause of defense plant lay-offs is another current problem, the new Assemblyman says. He has a small bu siness a dmini stration proposal that would giv e technic al advi ce to thos e who want to open small busine ss, and would also provide tor loan s to be paid Within a time limit to tho se who need financial help to get them started. Mr. Sachs i s also recommend- ing a consu mer defenders agency that would take the consumers or taxpayers side in discussions with utilities companies. The cost of higher education is another fieLd that needs help, ln his opinion . He believes in tuition free state unl ver s itie~ and feels too, that a student who earns a New York State Regents Scholarship should be permitted to apply that money to .out-of -stat~:> co lle ge tuition. Government Costs Money His campaign was a meet-the- people one set up by friends and 1riend s-o ! -friends all over the Fifth Assembly District. He talked to small groups of people every night, sometimes as many as four or five stops at homes and service clubs and organizations in one evening. On walk-throughs at railroad sta- tions and shopping centers, Herb Sachs had the eager and enthusi- astic as !-> iSlan<\e of his wife Sheila and their three children, Cheryl , 12, Suzan, 8 and Rickie, age 5.
