With reappor- tionment on the agenda before January, Herb Sachs' current term wm be a brief one. But campaigning again, as he must, next year, he will speak as As- semblyman Sachs, a title that bears unmistakable advantage. The show, which is at the Free- port Armory, 63 Babylon Turn- pike, trom noon to 10 P . M. daily, through Saturday is being held by the Freeport Auxiliary, for the benefit of the non-prottt vol- untary hospital in Oceanside which serves 21 south shore communities. The French dore clock and Wedgewood Items are from the collection or Mrs. Marie Rathgeber, owner of \The Rar- ity Shop\ at 2597 Beltagh Aven- ue. Fi r st A Coll e c t or \Like so many dealers,\ Mrs. Rathgeber admits, \I started as a collector. We stUl have a cellar and attic run of pieces we have been collecting over 25 years.\ . Mrs . Rathgeber be- gan her career when a single Wedge wood vase was dven to her by a friend. She has since branched out to include Tiffany glass and some unusual Meissen pieces, but her first love is stlll Wedgewood. In her col- lection, Is a basalt urn designed to hold bath oils, which the Weclgewood family has p l aced at about 1832, and cons i der an un- usually well-preserved item. She also displays a sugar and creamer in a rare cardinal and white color. This was a color combination, she explains, at - tempted at one Umc by the Wedge- wood Company as anexperlment, anddiscomlnued alter on l y a few pieces had been created . \The most common error people make,\ she says, \is in think- ing that Wedgewood must be col- ored blue to be genuine. There have been many beautitUl pieces created, including a lovely piece I sold not long ago 1n a pale bamboo color - bUt stlll authen- ticated as genuine Wedgewood.\ Early Am e rican B ed r o or.1 Mrs. Margaret HutUeston, owner of \The Hutt Antiques\ at 2670 Merrick Road, will be exhibiting an enUre early Amer- ican bedroom, Including the 1790 chair and the Unsey-woolsey bed- cover. Mrs. HutUeston has ~en in Bellmore since 1951, and in the antique business on Long Island tor 18 years. A specialist in early American Items, she once traveled to the remote commun- Ity of \Hog Eye Holler\ in the Smoky Mountains JUst to pick up a kettle of the type used for open-fire cooking in that period. A tew years ago, Mrs. Huttleston had the interesting ex- perience of taking a course in \Early American Homemaking\ given at the Cooperstown Museum. She learned first- hand how to spin cloth, weave, make candles, carve a wooden spoon, and cook an entire dinner over an open fire in a single kettle. \Nothing has ever tasted so good since\ she says wist- fully, and between customers these days, she tries her hand at Colonial-style cookery, such as home-baked bread - \only the ingredients come from the new supermarket across the road\ she says with a smile . Early next year, :Mrs . Huttleston expects to conduct a series of classes in Antiques !or residents of the community. She fee l s there seems to be \a widespread preoccupation wJth antiques - despite the very modern appearance of the new homes going up in the area.\ ON DlSPLA Y •• .Mrs. Margaret Huttleston, (right) with an 11!3:> oeo she owns, once belonging to john D.
