DECEMBER 28, 2017 T he S ag H arbor E xpress A S taff L ooks B agk \I'd have to agree with those who feel 2017 was not a great year, certainly not from a global perspective. From all indications 2018 will be more of the same, which I feel is a true call to action for all of us. However, from a personal perspective, there have been some shining moments in 2017. It marked my tenth anni versary of marriage to one of the best people I've ever known, my partner in local live music, cats, dogs and all important things, David Gribin, I also found out this year that, in some ways, you really can go home again. After an absence of some 26 years, I returned to The Sag Harbor Express where] first started work ing in 1988. Being back with The Express has made me love my life on the East End more than ever. As I watch this trying year come to a close, I feel fortunate and full of hope and determina tion.\ - Ellen Dioguardi Reflecting on the past 12 months \I'm still relatively new to the South Fork, and I felt so welcome in Sag Harbor the past year that I've been with The Express. I truly love writing about people's stories and important issues. I'm particularly grateful to the members of the village's regulatory boards for their kind, help ful perspectives every time I ring their phones. Plus, my Sag Harbor Express family makes being here truly rewarding.” - Christine Sampson \It was the best of times, it was the worst of times' - Bryan Boyhan \Looking back on 2017, it's easy to focus on all the negative things that have happened this year, especially politi cally. Difficult times like these, I feel, are the best opportuni ties for us as people to learn and grow. So, with all that's happened this year, let's think positive and look forward.''. - Chris Lester \With all the tragedies that hap pened this year, I am thankful for my family, friends and for living in a community like Sag Harbor. Most of all, I am hoping for a peaceful 2018.\ - Renee Sabloski ''Working on the last 'live' issue for 2016, we found ourselves covering the Main Street fire-a story that continued to dominate the front page in 2017, whether it was following the news surrounding the purchase , of the Sag Harbor Cinema property, other business« re-opening and re-locating, or community efforts to support the volunteers in the fire department and ambulance corps who protected Sag Har bor that day, and every other day of the year. As Sag Harbor becom« more and more of a destination, and the year- round community struggles to make ends meet the over arching theme of 'community' ran throughout the stori« of Sag Harbor in 2017, and that gives me hope.\ - Kathryn G. Menu “Every day is an adventure, and what an adventure it has been so far! As a person who lives on the North Fork and works in Sag Harbor, I can tell you that being at The Sag Harbor Express is much more of a joy than getting there, and working with these great people every day keeps things fresh and makes it fun for me. It also doesn't hurt that I get to sell advertising into something that I am proud to be a part of each week. That's all great, but THE MOST mind blowing event of the year was win ning the coveted Whaler's Cup for The Express at HarborF«t in September. It was awesome!\ - Terry McShane \Politically and socially this was a contentious and divisive year on the national level, which, for me, was unsettling. There is a lot of uncertainty in the world. But locally, and here in Sag Harbor in particular, there is often a sense of unity that gives me hope. It's those small town, everyday moments of support that provide me with comfort and a feeling of normalcy. For that I am eternally grateful that I get to spend my days here in Sag Harbor. Most of all, I am incredibly proud of my family, this newspaper and our entire team at The Sag Harbor Express.\- Gavin Menu \They say the darkest hour is before the dawn.\ - Stephen J. Kotz \It was a year of highs and lows. Things are happening so fast, up and down, left and right, being-tossed all over the place. I'm hoping things cag calm down, smooth out a bit and become more stable in 2018.\ - Michael Heller Tavern N ight $ 1 7 .7 0 E n tr é e s AVAILABLE T h u r s d a y O n ly ------------------------- fe a t u r i n g — — 1770 BURGER SIG N A T U R E MEATLOAF * KOREAN BBQ BERKSHIRE RIBS $9 W I N E BY THE GLASS $5 H O U S E BEER SELECTION ryH E 1770 H O j J s p \7 *7 (F m > R E S T A U R A N T & INN 1 4 3 M A I N ST, EAST HAMPTON W W W . i 77 O H O U S E .
