EXPRESS-NEWS & COBEECTOR. THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 1948 SAG HARBOR Novas. Beach Haven} and North Haven lloias SIIIIFFLEBBARH ‘*‘31a§-««....J’:“BUSI-NESS AND PROFESSIONAL DIRECTORY NOYAOK. NOTES are called game birds. The study of bird life is fascinating and satisfy-_ ing, much more so than the I. Q35 or crossword puzzles. The weather continues very cool for the time: of year: with white frosts several times during the past week, high winds and heavy rains. Arrival of birds from the South are very late. Have noted in the past the arrival of the Whipoorwill (a warm weather bird) as early as April 15, for they soon let one know they are here. the minute they land in the woods, it seems. In the South they are known as “Chuck Wi11’s Widow\ by their call, and they actually make a “chuck” sound as their first note. Very few ever see this odd bird as they feed at night in the dark and the twi- light, they almost make no nest, laying their eggs on the haves in a small depression and usually beside a boulder stone back in the woods, likely as a landmark so they can return to it in the dark. They catch and bugs in their wide open mouth as they fly, and a sort of hair screen holds them until they Iand on a tree or the ground and then they swallow their catch. At nearly dark one evening one light- ed noiselessly as a feather falling at my feet and then stayed a min- ute or two looking up at my face, ‘then off again to a tree to give its weird call. Their feathers are black- ish brown, they are a little larger than a robin. but with very short legs and a parrot beak, resembling the sparrow hawk and the queer acting night hawk who soars up in the air to drop like a stone with a whistling sound. These three birds are of the same order. Attorneys at Law , Land Clgaring As the season advances it brings more and more visitors to the open spaces, and many out to look for summer quarters.
