D ear F riends I have got so much to write that I don’t know where to begin, and have been putting ofl this duty from day to day, partly for this reason and also becau.se 1 was unsettled in my mind about what to do, ^knowing you would e.xpcct me to tell what I in tended doing in tl cause every day seem s so thing else, and when even there is always som ething going on. I'm too tired to write a letter. You sa y : “ Why don’t yon write aliout the people. University, etc. etc.” I must say that the condition is the same : e.xprcssed a b o v e ; \Don’t know whei to begin.\ Everything is so dift'erei here from the east. To commence r ightly, .suppose I bi gin with the stars, which are ilie only natural (to me) things here, that is, that 1 think ot now. Even the different in its looks and actions. The sun shines out brightly every day, all day lo n g ; the clouds, when there are any. are very light. 1 have now been here tour weeks and it haJ only rained once all day, and only one rainy morning; besides it had not rained tor a couple ot months be fore I came, and y e t they say they have had a great deal more rain than usual this summer. The siiiishiue is v ery bright and hot, though the heat is very difierent from Eastern sun beat, on aeeoiiiit o f dry atm o sphere; it tans one's skin to tlie color ot Iresh lolister. Of course J on have all heard o f the deceiving appearances with regard to distaiiec in Coloi.ido; the dilfereiiee in the range ot v ision is even greater than you im agine. For in.'tance, suppose you look at some object a couple ol miles otr without ti glass, and then try and joix can iiiiilerstand, or can compare the diiference in New York state air, and Colorado air. 'J he water here is not very g o o d ; it all \ditch water]’ and comes trom the tow covered mountains which 1 can see from this window, through the Boulder Canon (they don't spell it \Canyon’') and as it comes down the ick it becomes mineral water to -li certain c.xtent, for the miners some ol them let their water aiul refuse run in to it. One case in particular I noticed as I was going np the mountains about a w eek a g o ; there was a little stream com ing trom one of the side caverns, which was ot a very milky color; it came from a placer mine which was probably ri. h in arsenic, antimony. The water we get here at the hospi tal is ipiite m ilk y ; when it is p.nired into a glass you can see the white streaks stir aroiiu.l like pouring water into agluss that has h id milk in it, though not tpi.te so plain, to be sure. I don't ill'iiik tmicli water; mitstly luiln.
