Christmas will be four weeks from Sunday schools are already discuss ing plans for Christmas. Winter now appears to have com menced in real earnest. The second snow fall of the season occurred Sunday morning. It is time to put up storm houses and prepare for winter weather. The supervisors adjourned yesterday for their usual Thanksgiving recess. The board of trustees will have its December meeting next Monday even- ing. ^ Snow fences are being erected along exposed sections of the electric Miss Fenn’s dancing class will give a reception Thanksgiving night in Masonic hall. The Busy Ten Social Club will hold a dancing party next Monday evening in Eadder hall. ______ Attention is called to A. M. Shep ard’s new ad. in this issue of the C ourier -J ournal . ______ The village schools will remain closed for the Thanksgiving recess until Monday next. Holiday ads. help to sell holiday goods. Merchants should make note of this and act accordingly. December is the month of annual elections in many of the societies and organizations in this village. Powhatan lodge of Odd Fellows will confer the initiatory degree on five candidates Friday evening. The only people who have any right to object to the contiaued mild weather, are those who have full coal The L. O. B. A. will hold a card party in their rooms over Waller’s hardware, on Friday evening of this Those who have the most to be thankful for are usually the ones who do the least to make others --fhankfal. The foot-ball season will soon close and the young men will gradually assume a more civilized appearance %et their hair cut and cut out more or less of their gridiron vocabulary. Thanksgiving services will be held at Trinity church in this village. Communion at 8 A. M , with sermon at 10:30 A. M. The Daughters of tbe American Revolution met at the home of the Misses Henion on Prospect street Monday evening. That advertising pays may be ascer tained by a perusal of trade announce ments appearing in every issue of the C ourier -J ournal . Patronize home merchants is a motto that if practiced, will be a constant stimulus to local business men and enterprises. The annual conference of the Auburn district will be held Decem ber 1st and 2nd at the Methodist church in this village. It -takes an American eagle this year to purchase an American turkey of a size suitable for a proper obser vance of Thanksgiving. To build up and successfully main tain a retail business in any line, your advertisement should appear in the columns of the C ourier J ournal . A special communication of Poca hontas lodge F. & A. M. will be held Friday evening, November 28th for the purpose of conferring the third degree. ^ There will be a union Thanksgiving service at the Wesleyan Methodist church to-day at eleven o’clock. The sermon will be by Reiv. S. F, Frazier. Fine bass and pickerel fishing in Cayuga lake offer unusual attrac tions to the local fishermen, who have brought in several fine strings during the past week. The C ourier J ournal will be sent to all new subscribers until January 1904 for only $1.50 cash in advance. No charge will be made for the re maining issues of 1903. A new time table went into effect on the New York Central Sunday. It will be found in to day’s issue. Only two changes were made in the time of trains passing this station. The date of closing the canals of this state has been extended from November 29th to December 4th un less cold weather intervenes and causes a change in tbe programme. Now is the-time to begin the selec tion of Christmas presents. The early buyers have their first choice of the new goods which are already begin- ing to crowd the counters of our local merchants. ______ The past summer has been very un favorable for turkeys and the supply has been small and the price high. A great many young turkeys were killed by the cold and wet weather last springy______ ________ A number of dandelions in blossom were seen in sheltered places in this village last week. The weather since week has convinced the unsea sonable bloomers of the error into which they had fallen. Holiday announcements can be made to tbe best advantage in the columns of the C ourier -J ournal for the reason that it reaches and is read by people who believe in patronizing the enterprizing home dealer. It is reported that there are numer ous cases of chicken pox about the village. This is a disease which usually confines its attacks to the juvenile portion of the community and rarely assumes a serious form. Although the supply of coal is gradually becoming more liberal, the price is so much higher than before, that the inference is warranted, that the coal barons intend to make the general public settle tbe losses caused by the coal strike. William A. Payne will have an auction at his residence one-half mile west of Magee, on tbe State road, on Wednesday, December 3d. The sale includes horses, choice cows, farming tools and implements, household fur niture and firewood. An invited party of maskers united in a pleasant and merry dancing party last Friday evening, in the new house on Ridge street, owned by Claude Morehouse. Refreshments were served and the Elite harp orchestra furnished the music. The regular communication of Poca hontas lodge No. 311 F. & A. M., on the evening of Tuesday, Decem ber 9 th will be opened as a “Lodge of Sorrow” in memory of the brethren who have passed, away during the year. These memorial services are beautiful and impressive and always call out a full attendance. The Tribune-Farmer is a valuable paper for agriculturists and contains a large amount of interesting reading matter as well as a great fund of use ful information. It will be furnished with the C ourier J ournal for only $1.75 cash in advance. To-day being a legal holiday the public schools, stores and banks are closed and tbe manufacturing con cerns shut down. The .post office will be open from 9 to 10 A. M. and from 6 to 7 p. M. The carriers will make the morning collection and de livery only. Next Sunday is the first Sunday in Advent and the beginning of the church year. The recurrence of this period is more generally observed by the Catholic and Episcopal churches of the world, though the custom is being gradually adopted by other denominations. The Mynderse Academy and Weeds- povt football teams have made arrangements to play a game at Lawrence park on the afternoon of Thanksgiving day. The game will be called at three o’clock. Admission twenty-five cents. Small pox is prevalent in the city of Rochester to an alarming extent and the state authorities have sent a repi’esentative there to see that every thing possible is done to preserve a strict quarantine and prevent the spread of the disease. Only a little over a month left of 1903. This is a good time to settle up subscription accounts and start the new year aright with a clean balance sheet. W e are always ready to ex change neatly printed receipts, proper ly filled out, for cash. The merchants of Seneca Falls are making preparations for a large holi day trade. The general prosperity existing in this country and in this village as well, indicate that the sale of Christmas presents this year will exceed any previous record. The C ourier -J ournal and the weekly Rochester Democrat & Chron icle will be furnished for $1.75 per year. Those who wish the Democaat & Chronicle should take advantage of this chance to secure two papers for but little more than the price of one alone. The regular meeting of the Musical- Literary club on Tuesday evening was of most interesting character. Homer N. Bartlett, bis life and works, was the composer studied. In addition to the regular program, George Beach rendered a violin solo, “Serenade,” by Herman, in fine style. The Twentieth Century Chat pub lished by the students of Mynderse Academy made its initial appearance for the year Monday. It is an eight page magazine with cover, well edited and presents a pleasing appearance. It should receive substantial support from the students and alumni. The size and number of muskrat houses in the marshes, if an old and timeworn authority on weather pre dictions may be believed, betoken a long and cold winter. It is more than likely however that if the trapper of musk rats had been thorough in his work, these predictions would not be so plentiful. A number of new Jdag and cement sidewalks have been put down iti this village during the past year but there are still a great many walks badly in need of repairs or replacing. The board walk is doomed to give way to a more substantial and durable ma terial under the operation of tbe present charter. Our local merchants are putting in a larger stock of Christmas goods and novelties than ever before. The people of Seneca Falls should visit the stores of the home dealers rather than go out of town to do their Christmas trading. It is to the in terest of all to keep as much money as possible at home. Men who in these busy times refuse employment v/hen it may be had for the asking, are to society what the barnacles are that retard the progi’ess, of the ocean vessel. It is from this class of men that the armies of men dicants who fill our almshouses, jails, work houses, reformatories, peniten tiaries and states prisons are recruited. The Ladies Building Fund society of the Trinity church will have a sale of useful and fancy articles, dressed dolls, etc, Wednesday and T h u r s d a y of n e x t w e e k . The sale will probably be held in the store in the Fartridge block annex now ac- cupied by H. W , Radder’s jewelry store. Thomas McCue, the proprietor of a pool and billiard room on Bridge street, was placed under arrest Sat urday, charged with permitting child ren to patronize and play billiards and pool in his place of business con trary to law. After a hearing Mon day, a fine of ten dollars was imposed which was paid by the defendant. George B. Beach will hold an auction at his residence on the Auburn road about two miles north of this village, December 3ad, 1903, at one o’clock, sharp. The sale will include a large number of fine farm and car riage horses, several bead of cattle, and one new Osborne spring tooth harrow. Terms of sale, cash on de livery of good s . The Kindly W o r d circle o f the Kings Daughters of the Presbyterian church will hold a pastry sale on Saturday afternoon, December 6th, from 3:30 until 6 o ’clock. A choice lot of pastry, consisting of bread, pies and puddings will be offered for sale. Everybody invited to come and patronize this sale as the young ladies need funds to carry on their work durflag the fall and coming winter. About forty friends of Miss Minnie Brignall surprised her at the home of her mother, Mrs. Anna Brignall, o n . State street on Friday evening last and proceeded to take possession of the house. The evening was spent in playing various games and the serving of choice refreshments. The intruders departed at a late hour after having spent a very enjoyable even in g , a l l v o t in g M iss B r ig n a ll a v e r y charming hostess. _____ J. D. Boardman has leased the plant and machinery of the planing mill, corner of Bridge and Water streets, owned by Fred Maier, and will start a pattern job shop there December 1st. The industry is a new one but is regarded as needful not only by manufacturers in general, but it will find also many patrons among citizens, who will be provided with a convenient and reliable place where work in that line may be obtained. The appearance of tbe CoitRIER J ournal last week in its new and enlarged form has elicited many words of approval and commendation from its old friends. It is now the largest paper published in the county and gives more local and vicinity news than any of its contemporaries. Sam ple copies will be sent to any person on application. The subscription price is only $1.60 per year or less than three cents per week. Every one can afford to take it. Only these changes were made in the time of trains passing the Seneca Falls station under the new time table which went into effect Sunday. The east bound train which formerly was scheduled to leave here at 7:32 a . m . now goes at 7:05 A. M. and the train from Geneva to Syracuse which formerly passed here at 6:19 a . m . now leaves at 8:34 A. M. The early morning train from the east arrives two minutes later, at 7:24. All the other trains run as before. Mr. George Smith and family of Rumsey street, desire to extend to their many friends heartfelt thanks for many deeds of kindness and sym pathy sho\vn during their recent af fliction and bereavement. There has been no improvement and will be none until some rational and approved system of road building is adopted. The thousands of dollars which have been wasted on our streets within the memory of the present generation have made no perceptible change. A Bowdoinham farmer saw the BatesBowdoin game at Brunswick the other day, says, “The Hartford Courant,” A neghbor asked him about it. “Nothin’ to tell” he said. “Just let twenty big hogs out on a soft field any day and then throw down a peck or so of corn in a sack, and see ’um go for it, and you’ll know ’bout what a game of football looks like to a farmer.” The various societies, clubs, lodges, tents, hives, wigwams, courts, lieder- krantzes, churches, posts, unions, assemblies, councils, associations, granges, etc., of the village and county, are now busily engaged in discussing plans as how best and most profitably to spend the long winter ev e n i n g s . The most of them will doubtless indulge in dancing or progressive pedro, campfires, oyster suppers, progressive euchre, piag- pong, musicals, sangerfests, fairs, banquets, debates, revivals, etc. Hot Water Bag What Family is Without One ? T H E ^ ^ GOTJLD DRUG CO. A story is told of a Pennsylvania farmer who wore his old suit until everyone was tired of it, and his es timable wife was almost ashamed of the hustling man who had been inside of it so long. But one day he went to town to sell his produce, and while there he determined to buy a new suit and—happy thought!—surprise Eliza. So he bundled a neat suit in the wagon and drove homeward. It was after night as he hurried homeward, and at a bridge over a river he stood up on the wagon and “peeled” and threw the despised old suit in the water. Then he reached for his new clothes. They were gone—had jolted out of th e w a g o n . T h e n i g h t w a s co ld and his teeth chattered as he hurried home. He surprised Eliza even more than he a n ticip a ted .— ^Kansas C ity Star.
