A s an evidenc e of the correctness of some of th e \ forei gn \ news , we re produce the following paragrap h , and our read- ers can judge for themselves : Both the Con gregational and Methodist churches iu Ss yville have been holding a se- ries of re vivals lately. H. T. Rogers , better known as \ Fred\ Ro gers , who keeps the lar - gest and most proatable saloon in the place , has been a cons tant attendant at these meet- in gs and has been so greatly affected that be has closed his place , sold all the fixtures and destro yed all the liquors. It is his intention to become a temperance lecturer. M r. Rogers is doubtless dis g usted with these exaggerations, and well he mar be. It is a positive injury to bis business. 1 he papers should \ g ive him a rest. This city must have a craze of so me kind. T he cut is very short from the hang- man ' s noose to the blazing ball-room of a Yanderbi l f s resp lendent magnifi- cence. Then , b y way of a change , comes the r eal blaze of a million bi g fire— from the smoking ruins of which we turn to the sweet , chi ld-music that is now t hrilling the heart of the great M etropolis , a s r end e r e d by little Josef Hoffman. Whilesuch melodious strains are filling the air , and deli g hting her citizens , we suddenl y pause , b y way of contrast , be s id e a cargo of sug a r , and wonder how some great folks ^ dare to p lay puss-in-corner with such a tooth- some thing. The N ew Yorkers never tire of vari- ety. A humdrum life would shrivel them up l ike mummies. Change is th eir native food. The law , and pro- press , both cater largel y to th is appe- tite , even if one has to demolish a lill y fence on Fifth avenue , or the other es- cort Gen. The Duke of New cas tle o ff e r s a fine cont r ibution to our Metropolitan taste , whil e the in- evitabl e news column entertains us with Bab y Li ppincot by way of contrast. Xow we must confess that we fail to see where the ancient St.Yale n tine can possibl y s queeze iu. N o w it is true t hat New York still maintains that creditable institution— the one cent meal , and its periodical en- tertainment for the poor as conducted b y Mrs. Yandeibilt. It is s m atter of hi g h moment to ihe young American gentleman to reflect , as be shapes his character for life , on the model b y which he wou ld be mould- ed to future distinction. The libe ral form of a ur Government, the omni po- tence of public opinion in thi s country of fiee, x m shaeklpil mind, and the hi g h destinies allotted to the elder republic of th e Western continent, impose pe- culiar rules of form ation on the rising p illars of the American emp i re. The schola r , the jurist , the statesman , the artist , the mechanic or the cultivator of the eastern continent , may not be the m odels for those of the new world —a world h app il y disinth ralled and aloof from the despotism of heavy er- ror , the accumulations of many centu- ries of ip - noranoe and encroachment on — _ 0 social ri g hts. The Young American should be generous—fo r here , as to an asy lum from cruelty and the whirl pool of revolution , thousands have come , and millions must- come as the old con- tinents break up unde r the hammer of convulsion and mel t down under the purif y ing iires of jud gement.to a pur- er and holier type. He must be patient and persevering—for those who have ever bieathed the atmosp here of mon- archy and hereditary power cannot in a mom ent be made to understand the nature and the full extent of our na- tional freedom; the lesson of Washing- ton to a youn g nation ar e often to be repeated. He must be brav e—for too much has been entrusted to him to be in the keep ing of a cow ard. To htm has b een committed the world' s last ex- p eriment for liberty—to him belongs the helm ot tne G overnment vessel, n his skill and patriotic virtues prove him worth y to guide the shi p of State thro seas of passion and under the adverse storms of exte rnal war. He must be energetic—for the men of America are self-made m en , and gather no honor from birth , but the broad proud honor of citizenshi p in a count ry where not a l o rd nor a lo r dlin g, as such , c a n th r ow contemp t over their p l ebeian origin.
