, .- !- : \ I .' , L PAGE 8 TliE SENTINEL THURSDAY, AUGUST 31,1989 Fire Extinguishers L Do you have a fire extinguisher In your home? 2./s your fire extinguisher straJegicaUy located where it can be grabbed In a hurry? 3. Do you know the proper steps for using a fire extinguisher? I'm sure that many of you can easily answer the first two questions. Small extinguishers produced for home use are Increasing In popularity and are finding their way Into more and more homes. The answerto question number 2 Is fairly obvlo.us: you are not going to buy an extinguisher for your kitchen and then hang it up where it cannot be readily used. At least I would hope this Is not the case. Now look again at question number 3. Most people who have placed fire extinguishers In their homes would probably answer by saying, ·Pull the pin.\ This was an easy answer to come by; it's printed right on the side of the fire extinguisher. A. Pull the pin B. Aim at the base of the fire. C. Pull the handle. Unfortunately, the most IIll>0rtant step Is lett out of these Simple Instructions. Yes, by following these Instructions you can make the fire extinguisher work, but while you're fighting the fire, nobody Is calling the fire department H you fall to control the fire with the extinguisher, you have made your situation evon worse by not calling forthe help that you need. Many homes have been lost or severely damaged due to the homeowner attempting to put out the fire before calling the fire department. Arst things first: get the fire department roiling. If the fire Is still very small after you have made your call, then follow the steps printed on your fire extinguisher. H the extinguisher you are using does not control the fire, GET OUTI Do not attempt to fight the fire with another extinguisher. The fire has reached a point where it is too dangerous to fight without proper protective equipment. More can be learned about fire extinguishers by contacting the Honeoye Falls Fire Department. A program has been developed around the NFPA video \Are Fight or Flight.· This program Includes hands-on training with fire extinguishers. Anyone interested In the program should call me at 624-3323.
