NYS Special Olympics in Mendon Mendon and Castle Creek Farms were part of the New Y orlc Slate Special Olympics which lOOlc place June 8-U, 1989. The Roch- ester area was selected as the venue for the games by the Special Olympic Comminee. Several stables were approached and Castle Creek was selected as the location for the Equestrian EvenLS. This was the third year that the Equestrian Events had been included in the program and the first year it was officially recognized, according to JulieBurneu. lulieand Bud Bumeu of Mendon were coordinators for the two-day eveoL Two therapeutic riding academies in New Yorlc State served as advisors and lent horses for use in the competition. Astride Stables from Syracuse and Lothlorian Therapeutic Riding Stables from East Aurora work with the disabled, helping to develop physical skills as weU as offering emotional support and affl11lUl!.ion. ParticipanLS came from all over New Yorlc State and ranged in age from 8 to 68 years. Many local stables and individuals volun- teered time and horses for this two day program. A ponion of Route 64 just south of the VillDge of Pitl'lford is being straightened and levcled. The project is to be completed in November, but the dctour will only be needed until September. Since this is a State project on a Slate highway, the Stale is only permitted to redirect traffic on other State roads. The present detour therefore routes all traffic 10 Calkins Rood.
