R. J. Thomas, president of the I'nited Automobile Workers of America, aa affiliate of the Congress of In- dustrial Organisations, predicted in an address in New York. Both women themselves and in- dustry would be responsible for Vhis situation, he told tbe twenty- iffirst annual fall conference of the New York Women's Trade Union League at the Hotel Roosevelt. •Tve talked enough to manage •sent and industry to know they r don't want women in industry aft er the war,\ he said. \ He declared also that adoption of the thirty-hour week would be the greatest single means of solv- ing post-war unemployment He ecored women for not tack- Jtcg their own problems, declar- **ir they had neither thought out what the problems were or de- rided what they wanted to obtain. He said they depended too much on men for the solutions. Describ- ing the fight made by his union to *-**ut equal pay for equal wark through the War Labor Board, of 'Which he is a member, he said: -Do you know not one woman J has ever appeared before the War Labor Board to argue on that ques- tion? It was done by men. And that is a woman's problem.\ He criticized tbe attitude of wo- men at Willow Run. where they {compromise 35 per cent of the union. Women Call Him Pirate -What is the attitude of a lot of women, thousands of whom never worked for an industry before ? iTheir average rate is $1.14 an Ifcour.
