R Rise in the Sock Market A PROBLEM FOR BOOSTER CLUBS **A healthful sign is the ten- dency on the part of baseball to return to elaborate plans for the opening day of the season. In other years, the day was an event in the life of a community. It gave the citizens something they could relish in anticipation and enjoy in realization, furnishing an impetus that carried on into the season,'* says the St. Louis Sport- > ing News. I -There is no reason why present-j da> celebrations should not be- • csne a red-letter mark on the cal- endar of every city, targe or small. V.-? doubt if even such large cities\; ss Chicago and New York have fce;ome too blase to thrill to an , D-J-time demonstration of the part fcaseball plays in their daily lives. \\Everybody loves a parade and J all welcome a holiday—from the] s^iall boy in school to the busy executive in the skyscraper. Al they need is a»; excuse, and the opening day of iht baseball season finishes the occasion. Cincinnati lorg has proven that it can be rrade a joyous ?vent for everyone. £ mailer than some, larger than rcany. Cincinnati is made up of the tame kind of people who dwell in New York City or Snow Hill, N. C.. which, as a member of the Coastal Plains League, claims the distinction of being the smallest town in organized ball. It is only j a question of whether one's per- spective is limited by tall buildings ] or broadened by the lack of them. Therefore, it seems a logical step in organized ball's progress toward recovery to revive the old- j ti.ne opening day celebration. Get t-:v<c and other bodies to co-oper- ate, enlist the support of the lead- ing citizens, whip up the enthus- iasm of the fans, have a holiday proclaimed, put the players on ex- hibition and make the day the out- standing event of the year in the community. The result will be in- creased interest in the team and in the game that will carry on long past the day itself and establish tfiimly in the minds of everyone— ooth young and old—that the club •i a local enterprise, worthy of continued support.
