Page 2 THE ENDICOTT TIMES, THURSDAY, DEC, jig, 1930 RUBE GOLDBERG'S WEIRD FIGURES TO BE IN THE TIMES By PERCY CROSBY There are certain things which stand out so prom in ently in a newspaper that every reader looks at them with the pleasure you fee' when you meet an. old friend.. It is that feeling which has achieved fo Rube L. Goldberg the repu tation of being America's leading cartoonist in fields where he has pioneered His cartoons stand out be cause of their originality. Hitherto they have appear ed only in leading city newspapers, but now the readers of this newspaper are to have them. It is a matter'of great congratula- worE BacK o' the Fiats. 1 A Curb*** Co?y SCOUTS DELIVER MANY VOLUMES TO LOCAL HOMES Husky youngsters of Endicott, clad in tho conventional khaki uniforms of the Boy Scouts of America, delivered nearly three thousand gray books in Endicott and vicinity last Saturday. Their precious burdens will undoubtedly be the most universally consulted volumes in the village despite the fact that they also provide the driest reading matter to be found anywhere without the sacred walls of absent-minded professors of Latin, Greek and other languages long buried beneath the stone vaults of time. For the books contain only long lists Of names with curiously ar ranged numbers after them, some followed by alphabetical letters that seem to have little signifi cance. But on the desks of the various owners of the .new books repose cold, black, hard-rubber robots, silent yet evefy-ready .for, usage, and as tho numbers arc spoken into them!. Aladdin's won- dcrful lamp could produce no greater miracles, for immediately comes an unseen voice in spon taneous answer to the call. You guqssed it — the scouts were pedaling the telephone books —and they did a good, job under the direction of Scout Executive Ernest L. Conlon. And 'inddent- ly, they brought back the old books that there might be no mis take in numbers from the consul tation of the wrong directory. But we forget \the\ niost\ litipoftiht part in tho eyes of the y<juths.— They earned a little extra money for Christmas. tion that t|ie\ work of this high-priced star is now av ailable locally. The first will appear in this issue, and thereafter they will be a regular feature. Babe Goldberg was born and reared in San Francisco. There he early attracted attention with his sports cartoons. From this nrnncn of illustrating he turned to the comic .strip as an outlet (far his fertile imagination. San Franciso. Jest 'its ~ attraction: - iot him by employing an earthquake] ox a fire,. call it which ever you, please^ to cause the newspaper tor whiebvhe toiled to dispense with his services daring the period of. reconstruction. Young Goldberg\ bastened^to Dew York., and in si ieW yeifii annexed a salary which preadenia of trig corporations could ,vrell envy. \Bp^liBh Questions\ was one •of tho Arst series which caught T»nufar'^fancy. Mr. Goldberg fol lowed this with the outlandish agHcs jof \Dee and Mike^. Tell your \People Who Put You to Sleep.\ \| friends about them. Human na- Back to the seemingly crude * drawings of the bizarre anatomi cal specimens which pass for hu man beings in these comic strips is the great fountain of humor upon which Rube Goldberg draws for the countless variety of his subjects. You never get tired of his cartoons. There is always a now twist. The circulations of greaty city newspapers have been [increased by their popularity. And the very fact that newspa per publishers bid for them sp eagerly is the^ measure of their lvalue. Hence the newspapers in .smaller centers of population rhave not-been- able to have them •up to the present time. Hc^everTw\ Goldberg jcartoons are now \to be released tit this territory. We have the' exclusive right to their publication. Watch tare is the same from Coast to Coast, and the cartoons which have been followed with such great interest by millions of news paper readers in the big cities will certainly arouse the same intense interest here.
