First, say at 4 o'clock tn tho morning, you drive the cows into the stock yard, where this calves have been penned up all tho previous night, in a hutch m one corner. Then you liavo to commence a chase after the first cow, who r with a per versity common to Australian females, ex pects to be pursued two or three times round the yard, ankle deep in dust or mud accord ing to the season, with loud halloos and a thick stick. This done, she generally pro ceeds up to the foil, a kind of pillory, and permits her neck to be made fast The cow. safe in tho fail, her near hind leg is stretched out to its full length, and tied to a conveni ent post with the universal cordage of Aus tralia, a piece of green hide. *At this stngc, in ordinary cases, the milking commences; but it was one of the hobbies of Mr. Jura- sore w, a practice I have never seen follow ed in any other part of the colony, that the cow's tail should be held tight during the operation. This arduous duty 1 conscien tiously performed for some weeks, until it happened one day that a heifer slipped hvr head out of an ill-fastened fail, upset milkman and milkpail, charged the head stockman, who was unloosing tho cubes, to the serious damage of a new pair of fus tians, and ended, in spite of all my efforts, in clearing the top rail of the stock yard, lea ving me flat and flubergastcd at the foot of the fence Soxa.—Oh, marry the man you lo\e, girls, if you can get him at all, if he is rich as Croesus or as poor as Job in his falL Pray, do not marry for pelf, girls, 'twill bring your soul into thrall, but mnrry the man you love, girls, if his purse is ever so small — Oh, never marry a fop, girls, whether he's little or tall, he'll make a fool of himself and you, he knows nothing well but to drnwL But mnrry a sober man, girls, there are few 1'ft on this bull, and you'll never rut the day, girls, that you ever married at till Ml .NKKVI. Mr for a abm pa -sage to California '\ We do not know that we have ever either heard or read, of a more singular Instance of Btrength and enduranoe in a horse, than is evideuced in tho following incident, fur nished us by our friend, Capt Wm. A. Ste phenson, of this county. In January last, (.'apt Btophenson started south with a drove of mules and horses, and proceeded with them as far as the junction ot the Big War rior and Little Warrior Rivers, whero they form the Black Warrior, in Blofant coujity, Ala. Here he found the bridge across'Big Warrior—the usual crossing place—-haa been swept away by the high waters, and the ferry boat entirely too small and frail to carry his stookwer in safety. He at once determined to swim them across, as the on ly means left of enabling him to proceed promptly to his destination, and they were, accordingly, driven into the current and Btarted across the river. With great difficulty they landed safefyi with tho exception of a largo chestnut sor reL who, probably entering the stream too low, was swept gradually down bv the force of the current, till its depth and rapidity, nnd tho steepness of the river bank, ren dered it impossible to get him out. Capt Stephenson followed hira along the river bank for several miles, from haif past two o'clock Monduy afternoon, until late at night, when it became too dark to see him, tin- horse still swimming against the current, and breasting its whole force with the mo«t determined resolution. On Tuesday, dpt. Stephenson offered a reward to any one who should get him nut alive; a number of the neighbors watched the gallant .swimmer, but without being able to make am suc cessful attempt toward his rescue Se\ 1 ral Umes he made toward the shore, but its rocky steepness prevent d his gt ttiug n foothold, and sent him batk to bum. t nun- It figmnst the sweeping current At one time a heavy piece of f| >,'.t,ng drift wood struck his back, and e \cu with this heavy burden pressing on him, he strug gled upward as bravely but as iti \flei tuullt as before. The darkness of the night again hid him from their view, and none hi In \ ed that he could survbe the long nnd chilling struggle. On Wednesday morning howev er, the watchers on the bank again found the noble animal, some miles lowir down, still with his head up stream, and branlv contending with the cold and powerful < ur- rent Through all that day he maintaim d his position against the stnwm, though stil) carried further down every hour, until to ward night, when he nenred a temporarj island formed by a slue running over the lower grounds adjoining it At this point, a worthy old farmer of the neighborhood, Mr John Porter, succeeds in turning linn toward the island, which, with gnat difhi ul- ty, he succeeded in reaclung. So soon as he saw him safelj lauded, Mr Porter procured a halter, and at gn at pt r -onal hazard, about 8 o'< lock WedneNl.n night, waded^through the slue, supporting himself by the brush and undergrowth, un til he reached the island, a distance of .some 70 or 80 yards, from whence he soon re turned with the gallant \swimmt r,\ sah h and successfully Chilled, wi .niid, and worn dow n with the long struggle fr \in Monday afternoon at 2 1-2 o'clock, till \\. tl ne-dn\ night at 8 o'clock, he was hardl\ able to walk, but the kind tare and alt' n \ tion of Mr Porter, in the murse of ,1 f. u 1 weeks, has perfecth rt stun d him to lu- wonted energv and life Fifti-tlmi han PpTTOti's STAWB or Ev^^liefrielidr of Hivam.
