Ithe prairie dog is fonnd all over the prairies and plains of the \West from Minnesota to Texas. This little creat- ure does cot in tlie least resemble a dog: on the contrary, one might take it for ft small -woodchnck, but its sharp clatter bears some resemblance to the bark of a joting pUppy; bence its nam*^ A full-grown dog is about a foot in length, the body is thick, the legs short and stout, feet large, and furninhed t*rith fire distinct claws, those o! tlio forefeet being much the largest and strongest, for burrowing in the earth. The head is rather broad and flat, the ejes large and bright, the cars Terr short nnd ralher small^ ^ei pecu- liarly sensitive. As they take notice of the slightest noise. The dogs have tiny cheek pouches, about three-fourths of an inch in depth and half that in diameter, which will bo lilled by a small acorn or half a teaspoonful ol small seed. The front or emitting teeth arc largo and prominent, well suited to procnritlg its food, which consists chieily of roots^ grass, and seeds. The color of its back is a reddish- brown intcrmiied with a few black and white hairs, and all tipped with white or a lighter shade of tho original color, the throat and under part of the body are of a dingy white, tho tail tho same color as the back, terminating in a bruiih of black hair. There is one peculiarity about this little appendage -^the dog tiever barks >rithout giving it an emphasizing jerk. Those little ani- mals are very fond of each other's so- ciety, and thousands of them are con- gregated in some of the large warrens j or towns. The town we saw appeared to be laid out with some order, as there were long continuous pathways or streets with burrows upon each side. About the mouth of every burrow is a mound of earth two or three feet in diameter, and eighteen inches or two feet high, directly about tlie entrance. This is C. A. A shower came up while we were in camp, and, during the time it was Kathering, tho little villagers turned out in a body and examined the banks about their homes to see if everything was in proper shape. We saw some scratching up the earth and patting it down again, as though they had found a weak place and would strengthen it. As soon as tho storm liad passed, another inspection took place, and if any damage had been done it was im* mediately repaired. Although we saw no advertisement of \rooms to rent,\ the owners of many of the burrows were not allowed ex- clusive use of their homes, for rattle- snakes and small burrowing cwls scarcely as large as a quail had taken possession of some of them. There ia no doubt that the owls prey upon tho voung dogs when oiJportunity presents, but the little dogs never venture far from their mother, and are safely housed with her in the warm nest dur- ing the night, when the owls are most a.tlve. Where the young dogs were running about, the old ones seemed watchful of tho owls; otherwise they paid little attention to them, pass- ing'and repassing them frequently. In the rattlesnake tho dogs have a deadly enemy. Day or night they are not safe from'its attacks, and no burrow is se- cure from its invasion. The deeii soft- ly lined nests are admirably adapted to its comfort, where it finds a bed already )reparcd, and palatable food furnished >y the young dogs. Tho next day sev- eral snakes were killed while sunning in the pathway, and several others made their es-ape into burrows. Cenerallj when a snake entered a burrow, two oi more dogs were seen to come out ol that hole or one a few feet distant, bui in most cases they returned to the bur row after a few moments, having given his snakcship time to get settled. Out of thoso tliat were killed had break fasted upon young dogs. About tho middle of the afternoon a snake was seen to glide into a bnrrow, and some one near by said he beliored there was a tiglit going on in that bur- row. • Seventl of tho party gathered about it. W'e could hoar a slight noise as of a struggling going on in tho depths of tho Lulc. Directly thosnako came out, and we could see that ho had been bitten just buck of the head, and was bleeding freely; possibly i t would have died, but the lookers on did not wait to see, but killed it immediately. I t measured over three feet, and its tail was ornamented with nine rattles and a button. At the end of a half hour adog came out, stood up and looked about, then gave a scries of short, quick barks, | seemingly full of distress, and then disappeared in tho burrow; directly the dogs came flocking from all direc- tions, and several ran into the burrow, the others soon dispersing. W e waited some time, and were about t o return to camp, when we saw a pair of bright eyes peering from the hole, and in silence we waited to see what was •bout to take place. Satisfied that there'was no danger, the head disap- pewed, and in a intniite three dog« •Aierged, dragging tho dead body of m companion, one of the heads of the »liUlock. The nftwk rose a few feet, bnt the weight of the captive was too great, and he descended to the earth onoe more; dntching bis prey more secarely, be slowly rose sRain, but a report of a gnn was heard, and tho \air pirate* and his Tiotim fell to the earth, both dead.
